My suggestion would be to improve your sleep hygiene. Like Yawningdog said, don’t take naps, cut out caffeine, etc. Take your xyrem, and go to bed at the same time every night. Don’t lay in bed and watch TV, go to bed and lay there and think about your schedule for tomorrow, what to buy at the grocery store, etc.

I also don’t like the feeling of Xyrem. I have been known to stay up until I feel it coming on, but then I go to bed, because I don’t like the feeling, and even with Xyrem, I can still fall asleep at night within 4 or 5 minutes. The Xyrem pharmacist told me that without Xyrem, people average falling asleep in 30 to 45 minutes. With Xyrem, people fall asleep after about 20 minutes. Its not going to hurt you to lay there and plan your tomorrow, make out a grocery list in your head or count sheep. lol. All of us with EDS seem to think that the time it takes to fall asleep naturally for PWON is too long. We have gotten used to falling asleep immediately. I started my Xyrem, for almost a year getting 7 hours of sleep a night, waking up naturally in the am. My Dr. wanted me to get 9 hours, but once you are awake in the morning, might as well get up.
