Maybe we are just misunderstanding each other but you seem to be wanting to argue that these conditions are not disabling. 9,500,000 Americans currently receive disability benefits. I can assure you that they are not all in wheelchairs. You can be placed on disability for having Fibromyalgia. My ex-wife is currently on disability for clinical depression. My fiancee’s son-in-law receives disability benefits for anger control issues. I receive disability for anxiety, depersonalization and depression (brought on by the chronic insomnia). Any mental disability that prevents you from holding a steady job can be considered a disability by the Social Security Administration. If your condition prevents you from earning a “substantial and gainful income” you can also be considered disabled.

The definition used by SSA states that to be considered disabled a claimant must have a severe condition and that condition must, for at least a year or longer, eliminate the ability to work and earn a substantial and gainful income. In actuality, a person can be working when they file and can even be working when and if they are finally approved. As long as their gross monthly income is below the SGA limit for that particular year.
