I am thinking about trying something other than TAP. TAP is better than nothing for sure, but I think maybe it fails me for a couple reasons:
1) It does not leave much room for my tongue.
2) It makes is almost impossible to mouth breath.
3) The jaw is locked tight with no room to relax.
I noticed the SomnoMed is different. They say it "does not impinge on your tongue inside your mouth; you have normal open and close jaw movement."
Has anyone tried it? I am also wondering, maybe I have the thing out too far. I noticed RickRed didn't have to take his out very far. Tonight I'll bring it in some and see what happens. My dentist never really explained to me how to measure it. Mine is near the 5th little mark on the plate. How far out is that? |

G'day DCTom,
Taking a look at the board after an absence of several months and noted your question.
You may see my previous posts if you look back far enough reporting on my experiences with Somnomed. I was fitted with mine back in January 2005 and have never slept without it since that date except when it went in for repair after my dentist broke the lower plate when reshaping after I had had a tooth filling repaired. For those three days my wife complained about my snoring
Cheers....Mike.
As far as I am concerned it is most comfortable and lives up to all the maker's claims - but then I am biased because I am an Aussie |

Tom, your dentist will have to tell you where he set the neutral point. It theoretically can be different on every TAP. Two full turns, or four half turns equal one millimeter. I'm turned out to 20 half turns. The only way you can ensure that the TAP is working correctly (I define correctly to me as well as it possibly can on you) is to get a titration study. I had an AHI of 18 at 18 turns and zero at 20. Exact titration really makes a difference.
Personally, I don't have a problem mouth breathing. I'm sorry this isn't working out well for you. Once again, I would steer you to my dentist, Sylvan Mintz, who is in the Rockville area. Although he works almost exclusively with TAP, he is familiar with seven or eight other devices, and could take a look at what you've got and see if it's the best device for you.
You were an inspiration to me and I'm sorry things aren't working out better for you. If there's anything else I can help you with, please let me know. |
