Thanks so much for the links - I'll check them out.
Edit to add:
I never got around to checking any of those sites. Dr. Woliner called with the name of a doctor who has a specialty in sleep medicine from ABSM. And he takes my insurance.
For those who may come after me and need someone, anyone:
James Andry, MD
2727 Babcock, Suite A
San Antonio, TX
210-614-6000
Obviously I know nothing about him at this time. My appointment is on 10/9. |

I know that there are many Doctors out there good and bad ,I have had a couple wonderful Doctors but they can retire and then it's hunt again
but from my years of finding a Doctor , I believe an understanding one its the most important thing.
Not that I have had much good experience with them ,but the neros. have been the ones who understand some of the workings of the brain.
all Doctors are medically trained but one who doesn't give up when nothing works or the ones who don't say it's my fault or I haven't tried hard enough or tells me I just want to get high( what ever that can possibly be , being awake is my goal) and last but not least " I will have to live with it " when the meds don't work.
you will have a gold medal of a doc.
Most of all don't give up on your self and believe in your self. that the most important thing.
I have been waiting for a Doctor Eve Rogers in Mpls but have not seen her yet.
G kate in Southern MN.
getting colder by the day snow, maybe here soon,
PS
I probably piss them off but I am the sick one .
I wanted to edit
this I have had 3 appointments and many phone calls.
she and her staff have actually saved my sanity many times, they are so calm and reasureing , even at my worse she hasn't fired me yet.
I really believe i when to N heaven, There is always a but she is getting so many pwns it is harder now to see her
well i found the gold metal.

I just saw this...yay!
Betsy, I not only recommended him here but I work for him now (generously helping me get acclimated to working again after many years being physically incapable).
I also read in your other post that he helped you find a local doc...that's awesome |

Rio, the other doc wasn't helpful. He didn't agree that I needed Xyrem, and put me on Lunesta and Lexapro. But Dr. Woliner found out that he could prescribe for me, at least for a limited time, so I got my Xyrem 2 weeks ago. In fact, I'll increase my dose tonight. The EDS hasn't gone away, but I'm hopeful. And I certainly sleep well.
You WORK for Dr. Woliner?? Wow! He's a great guy.
I need to learn to read - I almost missed that part. |

In the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area, Brian E. Angsten, M.D. is a great doctor. He was the first doctor who diagnosed me with narcolepsy and he explained everything through and through. He is super nice and is familiar with narcolepsy and its latest research and treatment options.
He is also on the ABSM.

In Boston, where I am now, I recommend Quentin R. Regestein. I found him through the Narcolepsy Network, as he is on their Medical Advisory Board.
" As a member of the DSM-III-R and DSM-IV task forces, Dr. Regestein helped define sleep disorders. He is on the medical advisory board of Narcolepsy Network and the editorial board of Menopause." "Dr. Regestein has given over 250 Continuing Medical Education lectures across the United States and in Europe on topics related to psychiatric and sleep disorders."

I highly recommend Dr. Lyndon Perkins to anyone in the North Mississippi area. He is a pulmonary specialist at North Mississippi Medical Center who also specializes in sleep medicine. He is a good doctor and a good person. I have been seeing him for three years and would not change doctors for anything. He stays up to date on all the latest sleep research. Anyone interested in seeing him is welcome to e-mail me for his phone number at vickiesmitheaton@yahoo.com. |

I am looking for a neurologist/sleep specialist in norwestern New Jersey. We are overflowing with pulmonary sleep folks, but very few neuros. I SCOURED the ABSM site, and pulled out every name with a neuro specialty that lives within driving distance of me. I then cross-referenced it with my insurance plan. So...
Would anyone recommend either of the following doctors:
Mangala A. Nadkarni, M.D. (I know she is director of the St. Barnabus Sleep Center)
or
Lewis Martin Milrod, M.D.
I'm also hoping this physician will be willing/interested in treating my multitudes of other neurologically-based problems... |

Hi, I have seen Dr. Hardie, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Don't know how far it is for you, but he is wonderful. He is the pulmonologist that does all of the sleep studies for the area, he's easy to get in to, and he's great with insurances and RX. I really like him. He'd ask me a question about something that I have (SP, HH, etc) and when I'd tell him about it, he'd then tell me what was happening. I told him that I love my "dozing off", and he told me that according to my sleep study, I was really dead asleep, not dozing off. I did my MSLT during construction at the hospital (stupidest thing I ever did), and he said," with all of the construction going on around you, you fell asleep in 2.5 minutes!" He also spent a lot of time with me on my appt. |

Hey ArthurM,
I have visited the mighty Dr. Thorpy about a year ago. He confirmed my diagnosis and treatments I was getting locally. He said he would be happy to treat me if I wanted. However, from where I live im Morris county, it was a 90-minute drive or so... My hubbie had to take off work (no way I'd stay awake for that drive). And, unfortunately, Dr. Thorpy didn't offer me any new ideas. If I ever get TOTALLY desperate (given the numerous incompetent docs I've found locally), I may schlep back to Montefiore. Dr. T was very nice and knowledgable. I just wish he was closer. |

mytell12--It's good to know that Dr. Pate is a great Dr too. I see his partner, Dr. Brevard Haynes,(in Nashville) and he is has been wonderful to deal with. If I ever have questions about meds etc, I can call or fax his office, and it is almost always him that personally calls me back. He immediately knew that I had Narcolepsy, and I wasn't subjected to a million crazy tests. He's been a great Dr so far |
