I'm about to wage battle with my insurance company and I need some input. I currently take 400 mg Provigil and after a near-death car accident and my doctor's insistance that I needed to up my meds, I also take 20 mg. Adderal XR. All is good and I've been happy with the mix for over 2 years now.
We got new health ins. last summer and they approved and have been paying for said meds since July. Now all of a sudden, they've decided that since I take the Adderall, they're only going to cover 200 mg. of Provigil. Can they do that Apparently they think they hold a medical license and that they can. My doctor appealed the decision and I just got the 2nd denial. I'm waiting for a phone call from him for some input but in the meantime...
I'm researching getting the Dept. of Insurance and/or ERISA involved but I'd like to get some input from you guys. Does anyone else currently take more than one medication to stay awake? |

I personally do not think the Provigil had much effect on me...I took 200mg in the morning and sometimes a second dose after lunch if I felt really sleepy.....but rarely took the 2nd dose because I was out and about without any extra pills on me. I was still extremely tired on the Provigil.
I was recently put onto 30mg of adderall xr. in addition to the 200mg of provigil. i have not taken my provigil because i would like to just be able to take one of them...and the adderall is cheaper. I seem to do ok on just the 30 mg of adderall xr.
maybe your dr can up the adderall and take away the provgil altogether...or at least try it to see if it works for you...
good luck fighting with the insurance company....isn't it terrible that they feel they can step in and just change something that is working for you?/!!
Don't they realize the effect this could have on your health?!! |

I take 400mg provigil in the AM, along with 30mg Adderall XR
In the mid-late afternoon - I take another 200mg of provigil.
Insurance companies are all about greed these days!, not caring about the medical needs of patients. They want doctors to use cheap generics.
(Just looked at drugstore.com and 90 200mg provigil tablets are $765.55 - a one month quantity for me)
I'm sorry to hear about your situation! KEEP KICKING SCREAMING AND YELLING AT THE INSURANCE COMPANY... They are experts on pinching pennies, not pharmacology.
I wish you all the best!

They can't or at least shouldn't be able to do this. You are taking a normal dose of provigil- within guidelines. That is not a stimulant. And even if it were then who are they to say that for your unique condition you don't need two?
I recently had to appeal a decision my insurance company made not to cover a medication of mine. I spent a lot of time researching it and I submitted both studies as well as medical guidelines subporting my claim. It was approved fairly quickly. I might have to resubmit some stuff again in six months, but for now its all good. So you might need to find some evidence that your treatment is normal and good and all. Your doc might be able to help you with this. I also like google scholar. |
