Hello-
So I was just wondering, for those of you who suffer from cataplexy as well, have any of you had cataplectic attacks during sex?

I'm 26 and I was finally diagnosed w N, C, SP, and HH a few months ago but I can remember having symptoms since I was about 13.

Anyway, I always had problems reaching orgasm, until a couple years ago. I finally had one and I completely collapsed during it. I wasn't exactly sure if that was how a normal orgasm was supposed to go, but after doing a little research I realized that I was having cataplectic attacks during orgasm.

So pretty much, when I orgasm my body goes completely limp and my jaw drops and my mouth hangs to the side and my lips quiver and I cannot move or speak. It's quite irritating but I have learned to just go with it.

I think it's important to tell your sexual partner about your condition ahead of time because it makes it less embarrassing and gives them an idea of what to expect. And being a female, I think it definitely makes the guy feel like he's done a good job lol.

I was jut wondering what other people's experiences were with this?

Yes!!! This is one of those topics that I'm sure happen to a lot of people but no one discusses it!! I was diagnosed with N when I was 25. I started having symptoms at 12-13 and started having C when I was about 18-22 (i'm not sure because I never went to the doctors. I couldn't explain it and thought it was my antidepressant). So when I started having sex I would end up just like you described. I though to myself well I guess if I can't speak it must be good (but I still wasn't convinced it was an orgasm). The first time I had sex after being diagnosed and after starting xyrem i said out loud "no way! It's cataplexy!" hahaha So now the paralysis and inability to talk as definitely decreased. Sometimes the C isn't their at all but it usually shows up. At least I'm not a rag doll anymore! Thanks for asking about this Laughing

Yes. First happened while masturbating. It puts a serious damper on the mood when you go to the floor when your expecting... you know... a little stress relief. This first happened a few years before my N with C diagnosis, so for a while I was scared that I may have some life threatening condition or something. (I guess I actually do, Indirectly) I could just imagine the newspaper article. "Local man dies while jerking off". However in hindsight, this along with my perpetual sleepiness allowed me to figure out what is wrong with me. By the time I saw the doctor, I knew exactly what I had. Still, I had to take a sleep test, after which they told me what I already knew. O well, I guess they need a diagnosis before they can prescribe narcotics.

Crazy thing is that I never questioned my weird "episodes". I had no idea how I could explain them to people. After my doctor suggested that I might have N, I went to webmd and looked up N. Well if I had done that years earlier I could have diagnosed myself Laughing

Don't worry about it. Your partner is basically going to think he/she is hot stuff if they make you orgasm such that you can't move. I make it into a joke. Sometimes partners wait anxiously to see if I've gone cataplectic once they get used to it!

I even made this t shirt.

I remember one of my first Cataplexic attacks, I was 14, and I asked my Dad,
"What did you just say you were going to do to the clothes??"
"I said, I was going to WARSH the clothes."
Apparently it was SOOOO hilarious I fell to the ground laughing. (Hey! I was 14!)

I didn't think my attacks were anything abnormal b/c it only happened when I thought something was really funny.

Then a few years back I had these attacks more frequently and then soon to start having them in public, soooo embarrassing!! So I started to research my "disease" and found an article on Cataplexy linked to Narcalespy and have been diagnosed for about 3 years.

Anyways..... So I soon discovered that I would also do this when I was trying to reach orgasm.

Like you said, I thought I was having amazing sex!! I actually passed out one time while doing this and found myself with a large bruise/bump on my head and my partners. Very Happy

I've always wanted to bring it up to my neuologist, but am too embarrassed to ask, and its not like hes gonna have a solution for me.

I was prescribed Xyrem this past week and haven't started to take it yet b/c I wanted to research it first.

All my partners have told me its HOT, but I feel like I'm not contributing at all. haha!

Has anyone ever gotten over this with medication??

I am new here and newly diagnosed, but I am so glad you posted this topic. My whole body goes limp exactly upon achieving climax. I also have MS, but there does not appear to be any know linkage to MS and this symptom. Having suspected C being involved, I have also noticed that similar reactions happen when peeing. They are not as strong as when climaxing, but the head and jaw drops, while the shoulders go limp. It is also extremely difficult to keep open the eyes when this happens.

Does anybody else have this same set to symptoms in common?

I have never had this happen while going # 1 (.... or #2 either ha!) Only happens when I'm really tired and find something really funny or when climaxing. I have had slight "spells" when I've gotten really upset. But thats about all that I can remember causing my C.
