I am in a dilema right now. I got so bad I had to leave my job. Luckily, we worked it out so I didn't get fired and I drew a severance. They just did away with my position. Now, I cannot work, but to get unemployment I must look. Heck, I can barely function, let alone look for a job. No employer in his/her right mind would hire me either.
So, do I cash in on all the investments I've saved over the years and thus have nothing left when I'm old and social security probably won't even be around or do I try to get disability? I'm fortunate to even have investments to fall back on, but I struggled to get what little I do have and am worried about what will happen when it runs out. My doc knows I can't work, but I thought you had to be totally broke to get disability. My mom told me that's not true. She wants me to file, but I feel guilty. I do have some money I could spend, but mom says I've paid into the system and should not forfeit everything I 've put back for my retirement. I'm hoping Xyrem will work for me and I'll be able to work again, but that is yet to be determined. Can you get disability for just a year and have it re-evaluated? I think my doc would go along with me on trying.
I'm very confused right now. I pushed myself so hard all my life and was successful, but I kept getting worse and just fell apart. I'm struggling and know it will take time to get some kind of effective treatment. It sounds like it's hard to get benefits, so should I start trying now while I still have money to support myself? Any ideas or thoughts? Help!! |

For the Unemployment - can you look for jobs and apply over the internet? This was acceptable in SC. I just applied for positions that I felt I would probably not get a response on.
I would consult an attorney about getting SS disability. They often turn you down the first time automatically. They usually do not pay until you have been disabled for a period of 6 months. I think they re-evaluate at least annually.
I would also talk to your Dr so he could make sure he has enough documentation. You may need to keep sleep logs, etc for him. |

crazycatnapper,
No, you don't have to be broke to apply for SSI. Unfortunatley, many people BECOME broke while WAITING for SS disability!!!
Look at SSI as insurance you have paid into while you were working. They took money out of your paychecks, and in the event you became unable to work, you are insured.
Bottom line, you have to declare when you became unemployable via doctors documentations and test results. Definitely do what verysleepinsc suggested, and talk to an SSI attorney. Many times the attorneys won't work with you until you have already been denied. But, I suggest finding a good lawyer who will help you fill out the paperwork, and tell you what types of medical records you should obtain for your case.
And, yes, SS is not meant to be permanent unless you need it to be. Trust me, they want you to go back to work if you can.
Don't feel guilty. I understand why you do... especially when we are young, and don't fit the typical social security profile. But, if you need it you need it, right?! |
