I have been using my cpap for 2 weeks now and I still snore - I can hear myself! It just seems muffled - wasn't this suppose to stop the snoring or does this mean that my airways are still closing up? My pressure is set at 8.STOP

Sleepy,

You snore when your airway relaxes and vibrates. The cpap would normally stop snoring - my sleep doc even said he Rxs one when the patient doesn't have OSA, but does have a spouse who can't take the snoring anymore.

You might want to talk to your sleep doc about it, and see if yoiu can rent an autopap for a few weeks or a month to see what your pressure needs are over a longer period of time than a sleep study can give. Your doc may be able to revise your cpap level.

Other issues are to ensure that your mask has a good fit and is not leaking. Do you have a chin strap and are you using it?

Finally, are you noticing any improvement in your sleep and how you feel in the morning?

I used the Ultra for about 2 years before switching to ResMed's full face - I have deviated septum and the full face seems to work better for me, but I keep the Ultra for use on overnight flights.

The Ultra is one of the better designs, especially since you can change cushion sizes - Standard, Shallow and Large. It is also good for adjusting the fit and is very rugged.

The best feature is that you can easily take off the cushion and wash it in hot soapy water to get off skin oil - a major factor in leaks. If you wash the cushion and your face to get off skin oil you will have a reduction in leaking.

Let us know how you go!

One of two things are happening, either you are not getting a good seal from the mask, or you need to be re-evaluated to see if in fact you need a higher CPAP level. I would first go with the mask. Yes the Ultra-Mirage is very good. The only thing I don't like about it is that the "outriggers" on top are too wide. I sleep on my side and it tends to cause them to dig into my forhead. I ordered a Profile ligth mask and it works well. I tried custom molding it as they say you can ahd it's okay bet was working a little better before I messed with it. Before you give up on a mask you'll find that the problem may be positional. Try moving that mask up or down a little both for comfort and for a good seal. Good luck.

I use the ultra mirage and like it pretty well. The only problem I have is when I roll onto my side I sometimes get leaks because of the forehead bridge is dislodged when it hits my pillow. I have switched to a firm pillow (buckwheat hull filled) and this has helped greatly. I tighten the forehead straps kind of firm but let the lower straps somewhat loose to get the best seal with fewer leaks. Make sure you turn your machine on before you adjust the mask. The air inflates the cushion to achieve a seal. Clean, oil free, face and cushion are an absolute necessity. One of it's best features for me is the adjustment at the bridge of the nose. Keep experimenting with your adjustments until you get it right!

I have the Nasal-Aire and it stops my snoring. I've tested it twice ~ in the sense I've asked my boyfriend if I have snored during the night when I've stayed over his house. He states I don't snore and the CPAP machine makes a gentle "white noise" sound.
I usually snore so bad, that I keep him awake at night when I stay over.

I've always snored ~ and it had nothing to do w/my weight. Even when I was younger and a wearing a size 7, I snored like a sawhorse!

However, now, w/the Nasal-Aire, it stops my snoring when I am using it!!

I was told by my RT, that a person should STOP snoring when they use CPAP. If you still are, you may have to be rechecked.

Sherm

See if your sleep doc will let you rent an autopap for a month to see how your pressure (and snoring) varies over different nights.

If you are a mouth breather and a chin strap isn't working for you I would also recommend trying a full face with the autopap. Dreaded the thought of one until I gave it a try.

I snored real bad thus the nickname, but since the cpap, no more snoring. The first night I used it, I was so quiet that the wife check me to see if I was still breathing.

Let me put it this way ... when I first started CPAP my wife had to keep checking to see if I was still breathing (because was not snoring)

I agree with Ken. This routine should stop snoring. I have Resmed Full Face Mask
Series 2 because of mouth breathing. If you are still snoring it could be because you are breathing out of your mouth or the mask leaks. The full face mask has totally stopped my snoring. Something to consider!
