I have been having what I think are night terrors for the last 5 years. I vaguely remember anything that happens, my husband usually tells me I sit straight up in bed (when I don't bolt out of bed and run out of the room) with my eyes wide open and scream bloody murder, I sometimes yell things like "get away", "don't touch me" or just "no". This is sometimes followed by hitting, slapping, kicking my husband because I feel that he (?) is someone trying to hurt me. Sometimes the screaming and running through the house lasts several minutes before my husband is able to wake me up completely and when I do my heart feels like its about to explode and I am shaking all over. Sometimes I see rats or mice in the bed and run to the door to escape them. These episodes aren't as upsetting to me as the ones where I have this knowledge or sense that something evil (pure evil) is in my room and is preying on me, desperately wanting to hurt or kill me. I can never see a person; it's rather like a black shadow. Very hard to explain. Sometimes this black presence lurks in the shadows of a corner, sometimes it actually levitates over me and sometimes I can see it creep over to the bed and actually sit down beside me. The pure horror that this presence brings to me is unexplainable. The word "horror" doesn't even come close to describing it. Often I have this out of body experience and am floating near the ceiling and I can see all this happening from above. I am looking down on myself and can see myself sitting up in bed screaming. My problem is, this seems so real to me that I am now having problems staying rational. I am beginning to wonder if there really is something in my bedroom that only comes out when I go to sleep, and I know how stupid this sounds. I feel as though it is the devil, a ghost or "death" itself and it is just waiting for me. Does anyone else go through this? I am desperate at this point and feel very foolish because I am a grown woman who is scared of the dark now. I also have terrible migraines that started around the same time and wonder if the two are connected?

The second half of your post sounds like sleep paralysis, which is not harmful. It's just scary. I've had episodes of sleep paralysis for years. It was terrifying at the beginning, but now I just accept it. When I quit worrying about it, it doesn't happen that much anymore. When it does happen, it isn't as scary as it use to be. When it happens, it feels real. It feels like an evil presence is in the room watching you. I'm not sure if that is what your experiencing, but if it is, try not to worry about it. I know that's easier said than done, but I found that the more I worried about it, the more it happened. I've had some intense experiences with it. I'm fixing to post them in a sleep paralysis thread. Hang in there Wink

Thanks for the support Rob. I know since I have been doing a little research on night terrors and sleep paralysis that is seems like I suffer from both, but I don't know if that is possible? Realization tells me that nothing is lurking in my room, but these events are so real when they happen. I hate them and wish they would stop. But you are correct, the more I seem to dwell on them the more often they happen to me.
I look forward to reading your posting in the sleep paralysis thread and thanks again for the support.

I have been looking forever for anybody out there experiencing this. I was beginning to think I was crazy. I call it "the dark evil thing" or "the entity". And it is exactly as you describe. It has no shape. It is more like an absence of space.. It is nothing but pure evil and causes feelings of doom and dread. I hate that you are experiencing it...but at the same time glad to learn I am not the only one.

Hello!
I don't know what is causing these night (hallucinations?) and terrors and I won't pretend I know what it is but I DO KNOW that a very dear friend of mine has been suffering these same experiences and nobody will take him seriously. It is ruining his life and because of others' failure to try and understand he is now in total isolation. I can't get him to leave the house! (He gets panic attacks during the day) and sometimes has boughts of insomnia. But all these episodes happen while he's trying to sleep and he swears these "creatures" are real. He's tried to touch but then his hands shake and go "through" the creature. This either stops the episode or it morphs into a new one.
If you have any info for him as this case seems similar to yours or want to talk to him or me, I know he would be in tears from joy of knowing he's not crazy or alone! And maybe he could get on track to some answers.
Thanks and God Bless

The Evil Entity - yes, I have seen it too.

Scientific studies, some more conclusive than others, indicate that sleep paralysis is related to a temporal lobe seizure which when simulated, gives the same symptom of an evil entity being present. (good ol' incubus... or is it sucubus?) The "conclusion" was that it stimulates some semi-dormant part of the brain that exists only in fear mode and that for most people ultimate fear is related to being trapped at the will of pure evil. even athiests experience it. Makes you wonder, doesn't it. The brain is a strange place and the Mind even stranger. Give someone a sleep disorder and all that is truly intellectual or logical goes to h*ll along with your sanity.

EM-

I also wondered if I had been sexually assaulted or molested as a child but to the best of my knowledge and/or memory I haven't been. How old is your son? I think you just get to the point where you are desperate to find a reason or an explanation as to why these nightmarish things are happening to you. And the more sleep you lose, the more your mind runs wild. It got to the point where I (a 37 year old woman) was afraid of the dark and dreaded going to bed. Knowing in the back of my mind that this evil “thing” was going to be waiting for me on the other side.

When these night terrors happen, they are so real and when I felt or got a glimpse of this dark, evil presence I would have sworn on my mother’s life that the devil really was in my room. It was that real to me. I just knew this wasn’t just a state of mind or a sleep disorder (even though I know it is). I really had to reason with myself and convince myself that this wasn't real. I felt as though somehow, someway I was crossing over to another realm of life between awake and asleep and this creature was here to torment me. I was having night terrors at least every other night for weeks on end. I don't consider myself a religious person but as a last ditch effort I remembered I had a bible buried away in the closet and I got it out, dusted it off and set it on the night stand by my bed where this presence would all too often visit me. It's going on 3 months and I haven't had a night terror since. Call it coincidence, call it what you will................. I’m not preaching here, I'm just thankful that they have at least gone away for now.
Hell I would have tried anything at this point.

They say that stress brings on night terrors but I have probably had the most stressful month ever and I still haven’t had one. The anger your son is going through could just be caused by lack of sleep. You don’t realize how valuable good sleep is until you lose it. It can make the mind and body do strange things. I hope it all works out for you and your son. Keep us posted.

Hello, everyone. I just read your posts, and I may have some helpful info. I used to suffer from temporal lobe seizures, during which I experienced a feeling of deja vu, intense fear, strange smells and/or tastes, pounding heart, rapid breathing, and sweats. For years, doctors thought these were panic attacks, then epilepsy. Six different meds failed to stop or even control the events. All medical tests came out normal, until my neurologist ordered an MRI with contrast. What had been causing these horrible episodes, was a brain lesion called a cavernous angioma. It was a 3 cm. slow-leaking hemorrhage that a tiny percentage of us are born with, and causes problems later in life. I was forty when the seizures started. This site describes the seizures: http://my.webmd.com/content/article/10/1680_54772.htm

When I first started having sleep paralysis with hypnagogic hallucinations, in my efforts to try to figure out what was wrong with me, I came across the BEST site for info on this subject! Maybe some of you will also find it helpful. What scared me the most is the fact that it seems that for the most part, everyone that has these experiences, describe them in a VERY similar way.... so how do we know it's just a hallucination? Sad

Do you believe that you were awake when this happens?

My mother told me about this exact thing happening to her a long time ago. She said it was terrifying and that she was certain that she was not sleeping when it happened. Does anyone know if people who experience this ARE awake or are asleep?

Thanks!

Hi wide awake,

this happens to me. It started back in 1994. I am 32yrs old now. It went away for many years and recently has returned. That is why I am here on this site. I had no clue what was going on. Yes, you feel evil presence and like something is around and above you. it is absolutely scary. It only happens when I am laying on my back. You feel like you are screaming for help and nothing comes out. I believe it happens when I am asleep. Because there are times I am coming out of it and I see my eyelids open. It is terrifying and not pleasant.

Thank you for the reply. I'm sorry this has come back for you... it does sound very terrifying, but I wonder if you can somehow think to yourself while it's happening that it's not real? I'm sorry if this is an offensive idea (maybe there's no way you feel it's possible to do that), but I am able to do this sometimes when I'm having a bad dream. I think it's called lucid dreaming. I can be having the most godawful dream, and while I'm still asleep, I "realize" I'm only dreaming cause real life can't be this weird.

Anyway, thank you again for the response. When the evil presence thing happened to my mother she SWORE she was awake at the time (although it did happen at night).
