ResMed to Educate Bariatric Surgeons at American Society for Bariatric Surgery Annual Meeting

San Diego, CA - April 22, 2005

ResMed Corp (NYSE: RMD), a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of products for the screening, treatment, and management of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), announced further progress in its ongoing efforts to increase awareness and recognition of the link prevalence of OSA in bariatric surgery patients. As part of this initiative, ResMed is helping sleep laboratories and home medical equipment (HME) providers develop relationships with bariatric programs.

The comorbidity of SDB and bariatrics has already been well established; studies have shown that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 77% of bariatric surgery patients, a substantially higher percentage than in the general population.1 Additionally, bariatric surgery patients with OSA have three times greater risk for complications in surgery than those without.2 However, treatment with positive airway pressure (PAP) can reduce post-operative complications, as well as hospital costs and length of stay.3 Further, PAP treatment may improve common comorbidities associated with obesity (eg, hypertension) prior to surgery. Due to these significant interactions, ResMed is working to build relationships between the sleep medicine and bariatric surgery communities with the goal of implementing practical solutions for sleep apnea in private practice.

ResMed will be exhibiting at booth #1019 at the American Society for Bariatric Surgery Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. The session will take place June 27 through July 1, 2005. The exhibition is part of ResMed's industry awareness campaign to educate healthcare professionals on the relationship between obesity, bariatrics, and SDB, and the potentially serious health risks associated with untreated SDB in bariatric patients.

"The vast majority of bariatric patients have OSA, yet a startling percentage remain undiagnosed and untreated in practice. As a consequence, patients are at higher risk and hospitals have higher costs. That consequence is preventable," said Michael Farrell, Vice President of Business Development. "We look forward to meeting physicians at the exhibition booth at ASBS and discussing practical ways for bariatric physicians and sleep physicians to work together to reduce their patients' health risk by diagnosing and treating OSA."
