Respironics® Launches the BiPAP® Auto

Murrysville, PA - November 1, 2005

Respironics, Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS Symbol: RESP) announces the release of the BiPAP® Auto, the first auto-adjusting bi-level positive airway pressure sleep system for adults who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Designed with the most challenging patients in mind, the BiPAP Auto is quite possibly the best option for improving sleep therapy Acceptance, Comfort and Results - all for the same list price as the BiPAP Pro 2.

"We've promised our BiPAP users more choices when it comes to sleep therapy, and now we're delivering. With the BiPAP Auto, we're giving patients the only sleep system that offers Bi-Flex® , auto adjusting pressure technology, SmartCard ® capability and advanced reporting - all at a competitive price for our customers," says Brian Bunofsky, product manager, Respironics , Inc.

The BiPAP Auto features Bi-Flex technology that softens the airflow in inhalation and exhalation to provide increased pressure relief, making breathing more comfortable and natural for the patient. Additionally, bi-level therapy with Bi-Flex has been shown to deliver a higher level of success for even the most difficult patients. In fact, one study has shown that 54 percent of non-compliant CPAP users were able to stay with their therapy when introduced to Bi-Flex.

Just like our proven REMstar® Auto device, the BiPAP Auto with Bi-Flex uses a multi-level algorithm that measures instances of flow limitation to make systematic, subtle changes in pressure and assesses the impact of these changes on the patient's breathing patterns. It can also determine how much of a response is necessary to eliminate events and position the patient with a more appropriate pressure, as well as compensate for elevated leak levels. Teamed with the power of Bi-Flex, the algorithm creates a sleep therapy tool that is automatically easier for non-compliant patients to accept.

As the mind behind the machine, the Digital Auto-Trak™ algorithm makes therapy more natural by tracking, and reacting to, a patient's natural breathing pattern. It can detect the point of inhalation and exhalation in every breath, allowing the combination of Bi-Flex and auto adjusting pressure to make each breath more comfortable.

Additionally, the BiPAP Auto offers advanced reporting with Encore® Pro SmartCard technology. This feature records detailed compliance and efficacy information giving clinicians insight into a patient's therapy regimen. Data management is more efficient, and reports are easily accessible for reading and sharing among physicians/clinicians, homecare providers and patients.
