Narcolepsy Awareness Patient Education Program

Minneapolis, MN - January 24, 2006

Saturday, March 4th, 2006, 1pm-4pm, Minnesota History Center St. Paul, MN - Area advocates for sleep awareness are partnering to present a program focused on Narcolepsy education. Due to an overwhelming need in our community, people suffering from Narcolepsy and Excessive Sleepiness are invited to attend this free event to learn more and to network with others.

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder caused by the brain's inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles normally. The main features of Narcolepsy are excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. The disease is also often associated with sudden sleep attacks, insomnia, dream-like hallucinations, and a condition called sleep paralysis. Its prevalence in the developed world is approximately the same as that of multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease. However, with increased public education about Narcolepsy and physician training in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, these figures are expected to rise.

Sleep Disorder Centers from across the Twin Cities and other area professionals have called on numerous doctors and experts, who are sleep specialists, to present on different sections relating to Narcolepsy and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness at this event. There will also be representatives to help answer questions regarding lifestyle issues that people face. Admittance for this event is free.

A series of lectures will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. Topics being discussed include:

Kathy Petersen, RNP - The Etiology of Narcolepsy
Dr Eve Rogers - Treatment options - New and Old
Dr Carlos Schenk - A Glimpse into the future of Narcolepsy Research
Mali Einen - Living With Narcolepsy, My Real Life Story

The Narcolepsy Awareness Patient Education Program is designed to be a very informative program for those who are interested in finding out more about Narcolepsy and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness and for those who are looking for more answers regarding their own experiences. If you have questions regarding this program, please call Bob Bryant at 763-520-4982 or Dr. Eve Rogers at 763-520-4980.
