Talk About Sleep is pleased to welcome Respironics and Laurie Scott as our special guest this evening to answer your questions about their new ComfortLite 2 mask.
Laurie Scott is the US Marketing Manager for Patient Interface for Respironics. As Global Product Manager, she lead the development of several Respironics Comfort Series masks including the ComfortGel nasal, the ComfortFull series of full face masks, as well as, the original ComfortLite and ComfortSelect nasal masks.
1. When was ComfortLite 2 released?
The ComfortLite 2 mask was released in March, 2006.
2. Can you give us a quick overview of the ComfortLite™ 2 ?
The ComfortLite 2 is a minimal contact mask, falling into the pillows category. It has a choice of 3 distinct cushion choices, to find the one(s) just right for you. We know that what is comfortable for one patient is not the 'right' one for another.
3. What else is unique about the ComfortLite 2?
ComfortLite 2 also has a unique headgear system that minimizes facial contact and reduces pressure points. The Halo headgear only touches the face at the forehead, at the brow line. The strap goes around the circumference of the head, and does not sit on the cheeks.
4. Where can I find pictures of the ComfortLite 2?
The Comfort Series website is rich with pictures and information about all our Comfort Series masks. The site is very patient friendly! www.ComfortSeries.Respironics.com
Back to Top
5. So, the ComfortLite 2 has a pillows cushion style - what do you mean by 3 distinct cushion choices?
The three choices are the Pillows cushion, the Simple Cushion™ and the Direct Seal™ cushion.
6. Tell us more about the Pillows cushion
The Pillows cushion inserts slightly into the nostrils for a robust seal.
7. How many sizes are there of the Pillows cushion?
It is available in 4 sizes petite, small, medium and large. That is a broader size range than other pillows masks on the market; fitting a larger proportion of patients interested in using pillows.
8. What is the Simple Cushion?
The Simple Cushion is a small tip-of-the-nose, more traditional dual flap nasal cushion with less pressure points because it does not sit on the bridge of the nose. The cushion attaches to a ball socket which includes an exhalation port.
9. What sizes does the Simple Cushion come in?
The Simple cushion comes in 4 sizes also - petite, small, medium and large to fit a broad range of patients.
10. What can you tell us about the Direct Seal cushion?
The Direct Seal is a 'pillow-like' cushion with pillows or bulbs that sit just outside the nostrils vs. slightly inside them. It comes in 6 sizes, 1 - 6 with most adults using sizes 3-5.
11. Do the three cushions all work with the same headgear?
Yes, all us the same un-intrusive Halo headgear and straps. You can switch from one style cushion to another in less than 5 seconds with just a simple twist and turn motion!
12. Is the headgear one-size-fits all?
Yes it is.
13. Do I have to buy a whole mask to try the Pillows and then another to get the Simple, etc.?
No, the ComfortLite 2 has several 'combo packs' that include two types of cushions in one. Also, you can order all cushions separately if you'd like to try all three!
14. Are the pillows two pieces or one?
The ComfortLite 2 Pillows and Direct Seal cushions are single pieces. They both include an integrated exhalation port in their plastic housing.
15. Do the Pillows expand in the nostrils like some 'prongs' style cushions?
No.
16. I've tried other pillows style masks and they irritated my nostrils with the direct airflow. Would the ComfortLite 2 Pillows or Direct Seal be any different?
One unique feature of these two cushions is that they include a metal band on the bottom side of them. The metal band is pliable and allows you to change the angle of the pillows or bulbs; a squeeze brings the bulbs closer together, helping you to direct the airflow to a more comfortable direction.
17. Can the metal band on the Pillows and Direct Seal cushions be bent to make the bulbs further apart?
Yes, the band can also be used to spread the pillows apart, so you have the ability to find a comfortable angle for the airflow on a daily basis, as desired.
18. I'm still not sure if a Pillows style mask is for me. I've heard others say they often switch back and forth from the Pillows mask to their traditional-style nasal mask due to nasal irritation.
This is often true. A lubricant can help coat and treat the interior nostril passages, but that might not be enough for some users. The ComfortLite 2 offers the small, nasal Simple Cushion as an alternative to Pillows and Direct Seal. Again, switching between cushions takes only a few seconds.
19. When should someone pick a minimal contact mask like the ComfortLite 2 vs. a more traditional nasal mask?
There are several reasons why someone might want to use a minimal contact mask like the ComfortLite 2. Some patients have trouble being compliant because of feelings of claustrophobia when wearing a mask, or they have skin sensitivities that are irritated by using larger masks on their face. Some seek improved visibility or are dissatisfied with aspects of their traditional nasal mask. Others just have a personal preference for less bulk on their face. The ComfortLite 2 helps meet all these patient needs.
20. What kinds of 'combo packs' do you offer?
ComfortLite 2 'combo' packs come with A) Pillows and Simple Cushions B) Direct Seal and Simple Cushions. Each pack has 2 sizes of each style to help ensure the best fit.
21. What if I try all of the ComfortLite 2 cushion styles and end up preferring one for daily use. When I need replacements, do I need to buy the 'combo pack' with the other cushions I don't use?
No. We also sell a mask combo with just the Pillows cushion, just the Simple Cushion or just the Direct Seal.
22. Do those mask combos with a single cushion style-only include more than one size?
Yes, there are 3 sizes in each. Additional sizes can be bought separately.
23. What if I know that I only need a Pillow in size medium, when it is time to replace my first ComfortLite 2 ?
Respironics also offers the mask 'Sub-Assembly', which includes everything EXCEPT the cushions in the package. Any cushion can be purchased separately to ensure you can get only the size and style you want.
24. Any final advice about the various packaging options?
Yes, ask your Home Care Provider for more information if you have questions!
25. Which of the three cushion options is the better cushion for me?
You are the only one who can make that determination. Our goal in designing the ComfortLite 2 with multiple cushion options was to give patients three chances to find at least one cushion that they will like and use. Comfort and compliance are the key.
26. My current Pillows style mask has short tubing that attaches to the right or left side of the cushion - it is my choice which side. My longer tubing attaches to the end of the shorter tubing. Because I move around a lot during the night, I get tangled in my tubing. Do I need to wear the ComfortLite 2 tubing to one side of my face or another?
No, the ComfortLite 2 mask assembly extends up the center of the face to a point just before the crown. Your standard 6 foot tubing attaches at a swivel at the crown end of the Halo headgear.
27. Tell us more about the Halo Headgear.
The Halo headgear has two soft, comfortable straps that extend from the center of the forehead and merging into a single, wide strap at the back of the head. It sits low at the neck. The 'halo' itself is a flexible oval shaped piece worn up the center of the head to just below the crown.
28. What is the function of the Halo headgear?
Most headgears are a means to attach and stabilize the mask to the face or nose. The Halo headgear sits low at the center of the forehead and has the Vertical and Angle adjusters suspended from it there. A Crown Swivel is at the upper end of the Halo.
29. What is the proper fit of the new ComfortLite 2 headgear?
The Halo headgear sits low at the eyebrow and the straps should fit just above the ear for the best stability. The lower headgear strap in the front should be snug but comfortable. The back strap should be worn are close to the neck as possible. Don't over tighten the upper front strap as that could cause the back of the headgear to rise.
30. I see there are 6 eyelets to attach the four ends of the 2 front straps. Why?
You will always use the lowest of the eyelets for the lower strap. This is for stability. The upper strap can be attached in any of the 4 remaining eyelets - adjust for comfort.
31. I don't have a very pronounced skull bone at the back of my head; will the Halo headgear work for me?
Our trials have shown that patients with flatter heads do best with the upper headgear straps attached to the two upper eyelets. This provides a slightly different angle to the back strap.
32. How about my long, silky hair?
Some of our trial participants found good results when they wore the back strap underneath their hair.
33. Does any of the headgear touch my face or cheeks?
No, the headgear only touches the forehead. The cushions only touch either under the nose (Pillows and Direct Seal) or gently around the tip of the nose (Simple Cushion).
34. How do you adjust the mask to properly fit it to avoid leaks?
There are two key adjustments you can make regardless of the cushion option you choose. Once the headgear is in place, you use an Angle Adjuster and a Vertical Adjuster for optimizing fit.
35. What do these adjusters do?
The Angle Adjuster controls the tilt of the cushion to the face and the twist Vertical Adjuster helps position the cushions relative to the length of your face and nose.
36. Can you explain the Angle Adjuster in more detail?
Sure. If you have seen a picture of the ComfortLite 2, you will notice that the cushions connect to a tube. The tube is suspended from the center of the headgear where the Angle Adjuster is. By squeezing the blue tabs on each side of the Angle Adjuster, you are able to change the angle of the tube (and cushion) either closer to or away from the face.
37. Once I have the correct angle for one cushion, will it be the same for all?
You will have slightly different angular adjustments when using the Simple Cushion vs. the Pillows or Direct Seal cushions.
38. Ok, now what does the Vertical Adjuster do?
As you look at the mask picture, you'll see a circular blue knob at the top of the tube connected to the ComfortLite 2 cushion. By twisting the knob, you either extend or retract the length of the tube.
39. Why is the Vertical Adjuster important?
There are many varieties of faces in the population and we want to accommodate both short and longer faces by extending or shortening the length of the tube for proper cushion fit. Again, depending on the cushion you use, the Vertical adjustment will be slightly different for each.
40. Are there any 'fine tuning' adjustments available for the Simple cushion besides the Angle Adjuster and length or Vertical Adjustment?
Yes. The Simple Cushion sits on a ball joint fitting. The cushion rotates freely on the ball, allowing you to change the tilt of the nasal cushion to adjust for leaks or for optimal comfort.
41. Any fine tuning options for the Pillows or Direct Seal cushion?
Yes, we've discussed the small metal band on the underside of those cushions, allowing you to adjust the distance between the pillows or bulbs to optimize your comfort and seal.
42. Do you have a patient-oriented Fitting Guide to help me understand how to use these adjusters?
You can find a Patient Easy Fit Guide for the ComfortLite 2 on our Comfort Series mask website: www.ComfortSeries.Respironics.com. Home Care Providers can order part number (PN) 1033070 for you.
43. I'm a sleep and respiratory clinician; do you have a fitting tool for me?
The Clinician Easy Fit Guide is also available, PN 1029161. We also have plastic sizing gauges available; ask your Respironics Account Manager.
44. What is the function of this Halo headgear Crown Swivel at the top of the head?
The swivel helps to manager your longer 6 foot hose with a 180 degree swivel which moves from one side to the other in an arch above your crown. The sleeve your hose attaches to swivels 360 degrees also.
45. Why is this swivel attached to the Halo headgear vs. being detached and moving more freely?
Our testing found two things: 1) the short and long hose easily get wrapped up around the active sleeper if not anchored. 2) the anchored swivel helps to absorb the movement of the long hose as you move. (Masks often lose their seal because the weight of the long hose tugs at the mask or cushion.)
46. Sounds like the Halo headgear has a solid design. Can I use the ComfortLite 2 headgear with other products?
No, the unique headgear on the ComfortLite 2 can only be used with this product.
47. I'm allergic to Latex, does the ComfortLite 2 contain any latex?
There is no Latex in any Respironics mask or their packaging.
48. I have allergies to other materials, how can I find out what the ComfortLite 2 is made of?
Respironics publishes a 'Mask Materials List' (PN 1016632), delineating the materials used in each of our Comfort Series masks. There is a version on the Comfort Series website at http://comfortseries.respironics.com/pdf/MaterialList.pdf. An updated version will be posted very soon. Your Homecare Provider or Lab can contact our Product Support department for further information.
49. Is the ComfortLite 2 a good choice if a patient tends to feel claustrophobic in more traditional masks?
Definitely!
50. Does the ComfortLite 2 work for people who sleep on their sides?
Yes, the ComfortLite 2 is designed to accommodate side sleeping by providing an assembly and interface that is centered over the nose and up the center of the head.
51. Is it easy to take the ComfortLite 2 mask on and off?
Yes, it is very easy. To take the ComfortLite 2 off, simply grasp the angular adjustment area and pull the mask forward then lift upward. This way, the mask can be placed on and taken off without changing any of the adjustments.
52. I'm confused with what you consider the mask, what is the headgear, etc.?
It might be easier to start with the headgear. Everything that is pale blue is part of the headgear. All other parts are considered the 'mask' - including at least one interface or cushion. (When insurance payers reimburse for a 'mask', it must be capable of delivering your PAP therapy.) The Pillows, Simple Cushion and Direct Seal cushion are replaceable cushions of the mask.
53. Can I use the Respironics ComfortLite 2 with your C-Flex devices?
Yes, REMstar Pro and REMstar Plus with C-Flex can be used with all of our Comfort Series masks. If you haven't seen our new, small patient-oriented M Series devices check out http://mseries.respironics.com. There will be a Talk About Sleep Chat on the M Series launch in June.
54. I understand that the ComfortLite 2 is an improvement over the original ComfortLite. How so?
The Pillows cushion was not available on the original ComfortLite. With the 3 cushion options, we're confident you can find a comfortable, personalized fit!
55. How else do they differ?
The primary and most visible enhancement is the Halo headgear design, with no plastic straps on the side of the head. The flexible soft straps are much more sleep-friendly. And the crown swivel is moved forward to eliminate any interference with your pillow.
56. Any final differences between the two you'd like to mention?
We've strengthened all the mask components with more durable materials.
57. I use the original ComfortLite. The cushions attached the same way as on the ComfortLite 2. Can I use the new pillows cushion?
Yes! The cushions are interchangeable between the two masks.
58. Can I use my other ComfortLite mask components on the new ComfortLite 2 Halo headgear?
Unfortunately, no. I mentioned that the crown swivel has been moved forward on the head to eliminate pillow interference. The attachment mechanism for the swivel is a newer design which will not accommodate the original ComfortLite tubing/crown swivel.
59. Have you discontinued the original ComfortLite?
No, we have not yet announced plans to discontinue the original ComfortLite.
60. How did you test the ComfortLite 2 before you released it?
Respironics does extensive patient trials at various points in the development cycle. We frequently test early concepts with small groups and use their feedback to improve the design. We do larger trials as the design is fine tuned and gets closer to final form.
61. Do you include Sleep professionals (Sleep Techs and RTs) in the trials?
We are soliciting more and more feedback from these professionals to ensure that the designs also meet their needs for easy fit, etc.
62. Do your developing engineers know what it is like to sleep with PAP therapy and wear a mask?
Yes. As with the general population, several of our engineers (and other employees) have sleep apnea. Living day to day using PAP therapy, they use their experience to try to design more comfortable and better performing masks.
63. How do your other engineers understand what we deal with each night? How can they empathize with us and build better designs?
Many of our engineers (and even marketing employees) without sleep apnea still use PAP devices and masks on a regular basis!
64. So, did you trial the ComfortLite 2 on users of competitive pillows masks?
Of course.
65. How did you run that trial?
Happy users of the leading pillows mask first were asked to take a survey and rate that mask on a number of variables. Then they were given the ComfortLite 2 with Pillows to try. They completed the same exact survey as before, rating the ComfortLite 2 after 7 days, 14 days, etc.
66. What were the results?
The users of the competitive mask rated the ComfortLite 2 higher on ALL variables, including comfort, seal, stability, noise, air flow, ease of use, appeal and overall satisfaction. That is quite an endorsement!
67. What direction does the exhaled air of the ComfortLite 2 mask go?
The exhalation feature of the ComfortLite 2 has been placed on the elbows of the Pillow, Simple Cushion and Direct Seal cushions using a series of small holes. When using ComfortLite 2, the exhaled air is diffused through these holes for a less-direct and quiet stream of air.
68. Does the new ComfortLite 2 mask make a lot of noise?
In our user preference trials, participants using Respironics and non-Respironics masks stated our ComfortLite 2 mask was quieter than other masks they were using.
69. I need to occasionally use oxygen. I don't see the little oxygen port on the new ComfortLite 2 mask. Is this an option with ComfortLite 2?
There is no way to bleed in oxygen at the mask itself, however, ask your homecare provider about an adapter that can be used to bleed in the oxygen down at the PAP device end of your tubing.
70. There is air coming out of the elbow on the cushion - is this OK?
Yes, this is air coming from the exhalation valve. This leak is intentional and removes CO2 from the mask. Never cover or attempt to block these holes. Your Pap unit is designed to still provide your therapy pressure.
71. What pressures will the ComfortLite mask work with?
The ComfortLite 2 has been approved for a minimum pressure of 3 cm H20, up to the maximum limits of your device.
72. Where can I get leak rate for ComfortLite 2?
Please refer to the ComfortLite 2 operating instructions for pressure vs. leak. This information is also available for our other Comfort Series mask at www.comfortseries.respironics.com. Operating instructions are also included in the bag for every mask.
73. Can I wear a chin strap with the ComfortLite 2?
Yes, a chin strap can be worn underneath the ComfortLite 2 headgear.
74. Should I be standing or lying down when I am being fitted for a mask?
To start, we suggest a patient be fitted in a sitting position. Final adjustments should be made with the patient lying down. To learn more about sizing and fitting the ComfortLite 2 mask go to www.comfortseries.respironics.com.
75. How does my provider get trained in fitting your masks?
We offer guides to help providers learn the best practices for sizing and fitting masks. Our sales reps also offer Mask Fitting Workshops to keep providers skills up to date.
76. Whom do I call if I have a problem with my mask adjustment?
Your homecare provider or DME can help, however, detailed instructions on proper adjustment of ComfortLite 2 (or other Comfort Series masks) can be found packaged with the mask and also on our website at www.comfortseries.respironics.com.
77. Should I clean the ComfortLite 2 before using it the first time?
Yes, we recommend using mild soapy water before you use any mask for the first time. For those with sensitive skin, it is a good idea to soak ANY new mask you use for 30-60 minutes in mild soapy water.
78. I hear it is important to wash my face before putting on my mask each night. Why?
Cushions tend to interact with natural facial oils. Your seal and comfort can be compromised if cushions acquire build up on the cushion surface. Don't use soaps with moisturizers or conditioners.
79. How should I clean the ComfortLite 2?
Hand wash any Respironics mask using a mild dishwashing liquid, free of alcohol, bleach, conditioners or moisturizers. For optimal outcomes, clean the mask and cushion daily. Headgear and tubing should be cleaned at least once a week.
80. When cleaning, can I take apart the cushions of the ComfortLite 2?
The Simple Cushion can be separated from the exhalation (ball-and-socket) elbow for cleaning. The Pillows Direct Seal cushions are not designed to be disassembled from their cradle or housing.
81. Is your new ComfortLite 2 mask difficult to put back together after cleaning?
There are just a few removable parts with the ComfortLite 2. The cushion simply attaches / detaches from the vertical tubing by a simple twisting action. The tubing assembly can be removed from the headgear as needed, but does not need to be disassembled for daily or weekly cleaning.
82. I work in a Sleep Lab, it the ComfortLite 2 approved for Multiple-Patient Use, reuse?
Yes, we have tested a number of disinfecting agents and published them in the ComfortLite 2 Cleaning Guide, PN 1032071. It is also included as part of the 'Guide to Cleaning and Disinfecting Respironics Masks' - PN 1011138
Back to Top
83. Can your ComfortLite mask be used with any other CPAP units?
Yes, our masks will work with competitive CPAPs. Device pressures should be verified when used with other vendor's auto-titrating devices. ComfortLite 2 has been validated to work with all Respironics CPAP and Bi-level therapy devices.
84. Will your ComfortLite 2 mask work with my Bi-level?
Yes.
85. Can I purchase ComfortLite 2 directly from Respironics ?
Respironics does not sell directly to the public. You will need to contact your local medical equipment distributor or online providers to purchase your mask.
86. How much does the ComfortLite 2 mask cost?
Contact your homecare provider to discuss costs. Generally, depending on your insurance coverage, you can get a replacement mask every 3 months to 6 months. You may have a deductible. Please check with your insurance carrier for further details.
87. I live outside of the US, how do I get a ComfortLite 2 mask?
Contact your homecare provider. If you do not have a homecare provider in your area, contact our customer service department at 1-800-345-6443 or 724-387-5200 and they will be able to give you a list of providers. You also can check the internet for providers who are able to sell masks via the internet.
88. Do you have a warranty for your masks?
Yes, Respironics warrants our masks against defects in material or workmanship for 90 days. Work with your Home Care Provider if you have a warranty issue.
89. How often should I replace my mask?
With proper care, a mask should last several months... If you notice any wear and tear, contact your provider to see if it can be replaced. Remember, depending on your insurance coverage, you can generally get a replacement mask every 3 months to 6 months. You may have a deductible. Please check with your insurance carrier for details.
90. How often should I replace my headgear?
Your headgear should be replaced when you notice significant wear and tear. Check with your insurance provider regarding their policy on accessory replacement. The life of your headgear depends on your usage and care. Wash your headgear at least once a week more in mild soapy water.
91. Can you buy the headgear separately or the mask without HG? Sometimes my insurance doesn't allow me to get replacements of the headgear when it is time for a new mask.
Yes, the headgear can be purchased separately. The ComfortLite 2 mask also can be purchased without headgear.
92. How do I order accessories for ComfortLite?
Respironics does not sell directly to the public. You will need to contact your local DME or homecare provider or online providers to purchase accessories for your mask.
93. My current mask causes the bridge of my nose to hurt - what should I do?
A big benefit of the ComfortLite 2 is that the cushion does not interact with the bridge of the nose - you may consider the ComfortLite 2 as your next nasal mask if appropriate. In the mean time, check with the instructions of your mask and work with your provider. Detailed instructions on proper fitting of the Comfort Series masks can be found on our website at www.comfortseries.respironics.com.
94. I frequently wake up with severe nasal dryness and nosebleeds while using my mask?
If you experience a runny nose, dryness, congestion, or a nosebleed when using CPAP therapy, contact your provider and ask about adding a humidifier to your therapy device.
95. When I wake up in the morning, my mouth, throat and nose are real dry. I don't feel like my CPAP is working right as I'm also still real tired. Any suggestions?
If you are only mildly dry, you may need to add heated humidification. However, you may be a mouth breather...as you are sleeping, your mouth may be opening. The air from your CPAP follows the path of least resistance into your nose and right out your mouth. This causes you to dry out and also reduces the effectiveness of your CPAP therapy. A full mace mask covers and delivers the therapy through the mouth as well as the nose. Talk to your provider about a ComfortFull 2 full face mask.
96. When I wake up in the morning my mask is often off of my face, why is this happening?
This could happen for a number of reasons, nasal congestion, wrong size mask, need for humidification or even resistance to PAP therapy. It's best to discuss this matter with your physician.
97. I've been using my CPAP for a month and I don't feel any better than before I was on it, what should I do?
You should contact your physician and discuss how you are feeling. You may need an adjustment to your therapy or a change in your mask type eg: you may have a nasal mask but you are a mouth breather and need a full face mask to receive your full therapy.
98. Any final 'key tips' we should all remember to ensure success with the ComfortLite 2?
One: the headgear should be worn low to the brow and ears. Two: The back strap should be worn low to the neck. Three: don't over tighten the upper front straps or it will lift the back strap. The lower front straps should be worn comfortably snug. Lastly: use the angle adjuster, vertical adjuster and fine tuning adjustments to find the proper seal and comfort settings.
