The Quiet Side of CPAP Therapy

ResMed San Diego, CA - April 11, 2008

In an ideal world, sleep and quiet would go hand in hand. For many CPAP patients, however, the distractions that may come with therapy can be a major hurdle when trying to get a good night's sleep. While CPAP treatment can eliminate snoring, a flow generator's noisy motor or the constant pressure of air heard from a mask can be just as disturbing, especially for the patient's bed partners. Fortunately, CPAP devices and masks have come a long way since their noisy and cumbersome predecessors. Manufacturers are starting to realize that quiet therapy is important in achieving patient compliance.

Why is quiet critical?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that for good sleep, background noise should be minimal. Research shows that noise disturbances during sleep can lead patients to feel subjectively that their sleep quality is poor. Prolonged or repeated exposure to noise during sleep can negatively impact a person's mood, well-being and cognitive performance, and can contribute to the development of chronic health disorders.¹

Naturally, the goal of treating sleep apnea is to help patients get a healthy night's sleep. If the noise of a patient's flow generator is disrupting their sleep or their bed partner's, they may not experience the benefits of treatment and they may not be compliant. And patients who aren't compliant may have poor health outcomes.

Quiet products for peaceful sleep

For these reasons, ResMed has developed a premium series of flow generators designed to deliver exceptionally comfortable therapy in the quietest device range in the world so that patients and their bed partners can sleep in peace and quiet.

The latest models in ResMed's line of Mirage masks (Mirage Quattro™, Mirage Liberty™, Mirage Micro™, etc.) have been designed with quiet performance in mind. They contain uniquely designed vents that reduce noise. These noise levels have been evaluated using standard ISO sound testing and show a significant reduction in noise compared to other masks.²

The VPAP Auto from ResMed is the first device to introduce Easy-Breathe, a new comfort technology that reduces noise to less than 25dB for nearly silent therapy. At the same time, the technology allows the VPAP Auto to recreate a patient's natural breathing patterns for a more comfortable breath. This smooth pressure waveform is also found in ResMed's VPAP Adapt SV™ and allows Easy-Breathe to fill the lungs gradually, leaving patients relaxed.

CPAP therapy should be as comfortable as possible in order to be effective in treating your sleep apnea.
