What is the FullLife?
Launched in late summer, 2009, the FullLife is a full-face mask that is used to deliver positive airway pressure (PAP) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for patients weighing more than 66 pounds. It is an alternative to traditional full-face masks that is less intrusive and low profile.
How many sizes does it have?
The FullLife mask comes complete with a cushion (sizes S, M, or L) and headgear.
How does it work?
The FullLife relies on a soft full-face cushion and a sure seal technology (SST) flap that gently seals around the nose and mouth of the patient. The cushion seal is supported by the chin support band and, to a lesser extent, the nose. By using the chin to support the mask seal, the FullLife reduces the pressure on the lower lip and nasal area, thereby giving a comfortable yet stable cushion support.
How does the FullLife compare to other full-face mask products?
Unlike most full-face mask products that use a forehead pad and arm, the FullLife relies on a chin support band to provide a soft foundation for the seal and to eliminate unnecessary nasal bridge irritation, pressure, or pulling. FullLife does not use a forehead pad or arm, which enables the patient to have a clear line of sight.
Are there any limitations on using the FullLife?
No, the FullLife can be used with all Philips Respironics devices, including REMstar Systems with A-Flex, C-Flex, BiPAP Pro Systems with Bi-Flex, and REMstar Auto-CPAP systems.
What information comes with the FullLife?
The FullLife full-face mask includes a pictorial quick fitting guide and an instruction manual. Inserted in the instruction manual are a registration card, a replacement reminder card, and a reminder sticker that can help track and manage the mask replacement cycle.
What is the web address?
Additional information and instructions are included on the Web site fulllife.respironics.com. There are also many instructional videos there.
Is it possible to read or watch TV with the FullLife?
Yes, the low-profile design of the FullLife makes it perfect for reading or watching television before going to sleep.
Is the FullLife quiet?
The exhalation ports located on front of the cushion make the FullLife exceptionally quiet. The ports are specifically designed to disperse air for a quiet flow of exhalation. Our trial participants were very impressed by the low level of noise created by the diffusion ports, particularly when compared to similar competitive products.
What did patients in your trials say about the FullLife?
Patients in our trials were most impressed by the comfort and simplicity of the FullLife full-face mask. They were pleased that the interface did not restrict the positions in which they could sleep. Trial participants also had positive feedback on the interface’s quiet exhalation and lightweight design.
How do I attach and remove the FullLife cushion?
The mask cushion can be removed from the mask frame by grasping the top of the mask cushion and peeling it off of the frame. The cushion can now be washed or replaced as needed.
How does the cushion go on?
Place the raised triangular section of the mask cushion against the backof the mask frame. Use your thumbs to press the mask cushion past the retaining tabs on the mask frame and press it into place.
From the inside, use your thumbs to press the round hole in the cushion around the circular hub on the frame. Start at the top of the cushion opening and work your thumbs around the opening until the cushion completely surrounds the frame hub.
Lastly, at the bottom of the frame, pull the cushion forward and over the edge of theframe until the frame slides into the lip of the cushion. The front of the mask cushion should be flush with the front of the mask frame. This may cause whistling if not done correctly.
Will any plastic contact my face when I wear the FullLife mask?
No. Only the silicone cushion, headgear, and chin support band will contact your face when you are wearing the FullLife full-face mask. The FullLife mask is DEHP and latex free.
What are the numbers on the bottom of the FullLife mask?
The numbers that appear on the bottom of the FullLife mask represent the lot number that indicates the date of manufacture (YYMMDD). These numbers are used to track the product and allow for detailed user registration.
What are the numbers by the face plate slots and headgear (1,2,3,4)?
The mask frame and headgear tabs are marked with numbers 1 through 4, indicating the order for adjusting the straps. The numbers also provide a visual indicator to show which headgear tab should be inserted into each slot.
How do I fit the FullLife mask?
Use either the FullLife plastic sizing gauge or the gauge that is part of the mask package to determine the appropriate mask size. The mouth should be open slightly.
Choose the smallest size mask cushion that is wider than the mouth and long
enough to extend beyond the lower lip.
The top of the cushion should make contact at roughly the mid-point of the bridge of the nose. The cushion should not entirely cover the nose.
What is the purpose of the little tabs on the headgear?
We call them strap stoppers. To prepare FullLife for fitting, loosen both the lower headgear band and side headgear straps until the strap stopper is reached.
How do you put the mask on?
Pull the lower headgear band over the head and around the neck. Position the chin support band so it rests under the chin. Place the mask cushion against the face by first setting the base of the cushion under the lower lip, then rolling the cushion up over the nose. Be sure the mouth remains slightly open.
Then simply pull the remaining headgear over the head.
How do I adjust the FullLife?
First, adjust the side headgear and lower headgear straps evenly until they are snug but not tight. There is no need to over-tighten the headgear. You then want to adjust the chin support band. It should still rest comfortably under the chin and allow the mouth to open slightly. It is not intended to keep the mouth shut.
What about the top headgear strap?
If necessary, adjust the top headgear strap if the side headgear straps are resting on the ears. This will lift the side straps slightly off of the ears. Do not over-tighten as it may cause the headgear to slip.
How do I adjust for leaks?
Raise the pressure to the prescribed level and turn the head from side to side while lying on the bed and with the mouth open slightly. In the event of a leak, start by “re-seating” the mask. Pull the mask directly away from the face then gently set it back into place, allowing the cushion to create a new seal on the face. Adjust the side headgear straps to eliminate leaks around the eyes and adjust the lower headgear band to eliminate leaks at the sides of the mouth.
The cushion is riding into my eyes - what can I do?
Tighten the chin support band if the mask is leaking and/or riding into the eyes. If leaks are still present, apply pressure with the fingers directly to the mask in the
location of the leak. If this eliminates the leak, slightly tighten the strap closest to
the leak to accommodate the seal. Do not over-tighten the headgear.
Can the FullLife be used with a chin strap?
Yes. For best results, put on the chin strap first and then put on the FullLife over top of it.
Will the FullLife chin support band prevent mouth breathing and eliminate the need for a chin strap?
No, the chin support band supports the cushion seal and is not designed to replace a chin strap.
Can I wear the FullLife without the chin support band?
No. The chin support band is critical in supporting the cushion seal
Does the FullLife have a warranty?
Yes, Philips Respironics warrants our masks against defects in material or workmanship for 90 days. Work with your Home Care Provider if you have a warranty issue.
How often should I replace my mask?
With proper care, a mask should last several months... If you notice any wear and tear, contact your provider to see if it can be replaced. Remember, depending on your insurance coverage, you can generally get a replacement mask every 3 months to 6 months. You may have a deductible. Please check with your insurance carrier for details.
Can you buy the headgear separately or the mask without HG? Sometimes my insurance doesn't allow me to get replacements of the headgear when it is time for a new mask.
Yes, the headgear can be purchased separately. The FullLife mask also can be purchased without headgear.
I work in a Sleep Lab, it the FullLife approved for Multiple-Patient Use, reuse?
Yes, we have tested a number of disinfecting agents and published them in the FullLife Cleaning and Disinfection Guide. Please contact your account manager for this.
I'm allergic to Latex, does the FullLife contain any latex?
There is no Latex in any Respironics mask or their packaging.
How do I know if the FullLife headgear is on correctly, particularly in the dark?
There are two easy ways to identify if the headgear is on correctly. First, feel the top strap. If the headgear is on properly, you will be able to feel the attachment tab on the right side of the top strap. Second, feel the center of the back strap. If the headgear is on properly, you will be able to feel the logo on the outside of the back strap.
What is the purpose of the two colors on the FullLife headgear and chin support band?
The black and blue colors help you to correctly attach the headgear and support band and enable you to quickly determine if they are assembled correctly. In addition, the different colors help you identify if any of the straps are twisted while you are wearing the interface. When worn properly, the black fabric rests against your skin and the blue fabric is visible on the outside.
How do I attach the headgear system to the faceplate of the FullLife mask?
You can refer to our website for videos explaining this process. When completely and properly assembled, the black side of the headgear fabric will rest against the skin, and the blue side will be visible on the outside. The mask frame and headgear tabs are marked with numbers 1 through 4, indicating which headgear tab should be inserted into each slot.
Can I use standard CPAP tubing with the FullLife?
Yes, the interface is designed to work with standard 6-foot CPAP tubing. However, for best results with a lighter weight system, use our Performance Tubing (PN 1032907). Traditional tubing can sometimes pull on the mask, especially if the tubing falls off of the bed and the weight of the tubing pulls on the mask. Performance Tubing is 20% lighter than traditional tubing and is many times more flexible. It provides a more forgiving connection to the device, since it is less likely to apply pull or torque to the mask and disrupt the seal.
Can I direct the tubing over my head?
Yes. The swivel elbow located on the front of the interface can rotate to permit the tubing to be directed straight down, to the side, or over the head. The tubing is flexible enough to position it in whatever manner best fits sleeping preferences.
What is the ‘quick-release’ tabs?
This is really convenient! If you wake up in the middle of the night and want to disconnect the mask quickly from the elbow without completely removing it –squeeze the swivel quick-release tabs on each side of the blue connector and pull down. The tube is now released.
How often should I clean the FullLife?
Hand clean the mask following the instructions below prior to its first use. Thereafter, the mask and tubing must be cleaned daily for best results. The headgear should be cleaned weekly.
How should I clean the FullLife?
The user’s manual included with the FullLife contains detailed cleaning instructions. Instructions also can be found on the Web site. Be sure to thoroughly clean the interface and cushion using a mild liquid dishwashing detergent (avoid using bleach, alcohol, strong household cleaners, and products using conditioners or moisturizers). Rinse thoroughly. Pat with a towel and air dry completely before use. Inspect all parts for damage or wear; replace if necessary.
What about cleaning the headgear?
The headgear should be cleaned weekly or as needed, either by hand or machine wash in the gentle cycle. Attach the tabs to the headgear straps so they do not latch onto other items in the laundry. Line-dry the headgear.
