WHAT: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is used to determine the level of a person’s daytime sleepiness. Results of a survey posted at www.snoringisntsexy.com reflect that those who operate heavy machinery, such as airline pilots, train conductors, and automobile drivers are doing so without having slept soundly or sufficiently. Daytime sleepiness is a condition that can be caused by an obstruction in the airway which causes the sufferer to choke, wake up and gasp for breath. This cycle, known as Sleep Apnea, can occur multiple times during the night.
“My concern is awareness on the part of the person at the wheel, in addition to those with whom he or she might come in contact,” says founder, Dr. Larry Barsh. “There’s a proliferation of stories in the news about accidents related to drowsy drivers. These folks put their own lives and the lives of others at risk…and must be treated.”
HOW: Click the SURVEY button on the home page at snoringisntsexy.com. Participate in the anonymous survey and/or view results. A score of 1-9 is within the normal range. 10+ is indicative of a possibly serious condition; and in that case, Snoring Isn’t Sexy strongly suggests a visit to a physician or qualified sleep dentist.
WHY: Snoring Isn’t Sexy is currently reaching out to journalists in the health field in order to publicize the survey at our web site. Once the number of respondents reaches a critical mass, we will alert you as to the results – in the form of a statistical analysis and professional conclusions.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale was introduced by Dr. Murray Johns of Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia in 1991. It is widely cited and employed in university research. The scale can also be helpful as a tool in diagnosing sleep disorders, though it is not diagnostic unto itself. Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC, complies with the HONcode (Health on the Net) standard for trustworthy health information. Dr. Barsh is widely regarded as a proponent of dentistry’s role in educating the public about health issues.
