ResMed Corp. (NYSE: RMD) today released its new Swift™ FX for Her nasal pillows system, an innovative new mask designed specifically for female sleep apnea sufferers. As the first company to develop a mask customized to meet women’s unique therapy needs, ResMed is proud to now offer additional choices for a market which, historically, has been under-served in the industry.
“In the past there has been a perception that women comprise a small percentage of sleep apnea sufferers, and, as such, their needs have been neglected in the market,” stated Bernadette McBrearty, Sr. Product Director, ResMed Corp. “However, we’ve seen evidence of increasing numbers of female patients, and we’ve learned that they have unique therapy needs.
Approximately seven million American women have sleep apnea. Although men have a higher prevalence of sleep apnea in the general population, clinical evidence shows that the risk of sleep apnea in women after menopause is equal to that of men in the general population.1-3 Sleep apnea has also been shown to be a risk during pregnancy.4
“Customers have reported that as many as 30 to 50% of their CPAP patients are female. Nevertheless, only recently have there been treatment solutions tailored for women. ResMed was a leader in addressing women’s therapy needs with the release of the first women’s mask, the Swift LT for Her. Now we’re providing even more choice and customization with the new Swift FX for Her,” McBrearty said.
Building on the success of the revolutionary Swift FX, the Swift FX for Her combines the ultra-flexible headgear and minimalist frame of its counterpart with colorful headgear options and a fit range that extends to include smaller sizes. The system comes packaged with two headgear options: one in bold pink and one in light blue and gray, so a patient can customize her mask to complement her personal style. Also included are two pairs of soft wraps in pink and light gray, to color coordinate with the headgear choice. Soft wraps may be worn over the side supports to gently cushion the cheeks and prevent pressure or skin irritation.
In addition to customized fit and color options, the Swift FX for Her features a versatile design that accommodates multiple hairstyles and allows a patient to wear her hair over or under the back strap. The headgear includes additional notches at the top to fit smaller sized heads, and Extra Small, Small and Medium cushion sizes are packaged together to minimize inventory.
Following the release of ResMed’s first women’s mask, Tracy Nasca, Vice President of TalkAboutSleep.com, said of ResMed’s efforts: “As a passionate advocate for CPAP patients, I applaud ResMed’s focus on the needs of female patients. By investing in developing new features that are important to women, ResMed is providing support to patients and clinicians who are committed to patient compliance.”
The Swift FX for Her continues ResMed’s leadership in the market by providing a new, high-performance option for even greater choice and personalization of therapy for women.
