Study shows ResMed’s S9™ increases sleep by 30 minutes on average

October 12, 2010 ResMed S9 Autoset

A study was undertaken to assess whether the improved humidification system, reduced noise, improved comfort of breathing and new user interface on the S9 CPAP would improve patient compliance.

Results

Average daily usage on the S9 improved 30 minutes from a mean of 6 hours 35 minutes on the patient’s usual CPAP pre-S9, to 7 hours 5 minutes on S9 (p = 0.003). S9 was also used significantly more than the patient’s current device post trialing S9 by 21 minutes, with mean average usage on the S9 of 7 hours 4 minutes compared with the patient’s current device usage post S9 of 6 hours 43 minutes (p= 0.010). Compliance on the patient’s usual device was not significantly different before trialing the S9 compared to after trialing the S9.

Conclusion

Compliance, in terms of average daily usage, on the S9 system was significantly improved over compliance on the patient’s usual device both before and after trialing S9. The usability of the S9 system was rated significantly higher than the criterion score of 6.
