The majority of prior studies describing the psychosocial and health effects of narcolepsy on the quality of life of young adults have relied on the memory recall of middle-aged or older adults. A new investigation to examine these effects is in the process of being implemented.
Drs. Sharon Merritt and Barbara Berger at the Center for Narcolepsy Research plan to examine these effects in a two-phase study comparing young adults with narcolepsy ages 18 - 35 to young adults in this same age range without a sleep disorder.
In Phase I both groups will complete a questionnaire. In Phase II the strategies used to manage narcolepsy symptoms will be explored in depth through a telephone interview.
People who would like to participate and want to make sure their name is on the young adult mailing list can contact the center in writing or by email at narcolep@listserv.uic.edu.
Inquiries from healthy, young adults without a sleep disorder are also welcome.
