Resmed Announces New Bariatrics Initiative

San Diego, CA - May 6, 2004

ResMed Corp, a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of products for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sleep-disordered breathing, announces an initiative aimed at increasing the awareness and recognition of sleep apnea in patients preparing for bariatric surgery. As part of this initiative, ResMed is helping sleep laboratories and home medical equipment providers (HMEs) build partnerships with bariatric programs.

"Sleep apnea is extremely prevalent in obese patients, with more than 70% of bariatric surgery (gastric bypass) candidates suffering from the disorder. Unfortunately, apnea is often overlooked in these patients," said Ron Richard, ResMed's VP of Marketing, Americas. Richard added, "Recent clinical studies have shown that sleep apnea in bariatric surgery patients is associated with increased complications and higher hospital costs."

ResMed encourages sleep labs and HMEs to work with bariatric surgeons to screen all gastric bypass surgery candidates for sleep apnea and provide patients with the most appropriate care available. Robert W. Hart, MD, AASM, and member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, from Suburban Lung Associates in Illinois, said, "The rapid, significant weight loss experienced by bariatric surgery patients suffering from sleep apnea affects their therapy pressures and mask fit over time. ResMed is sponsoring a symposium at this year's American Society for Bariatric Surgery annual meeting in San Diego on June 16, 2004, entitled "Excellence in Peri-Operative Care for Bariatric Surgery Programs." The symposium will include a discussion of current practices for screening, diagnosing, and treating sleep apnea. ResMed will also have an exhibition booth at the meeting featuring the newly developed program for bariatric surgery patients with sleep apnea.
