ResMed Inc. announced that data on the use of its AutoSet CS device was presented today by Dr. Helmut Teschler of the Ruhrlandklinik, University of Essen, Germany, at the European Respiratory Society meeting in Berlin.
Dr. Teschler presented data on congestive heart failure (CHF) patients exhibiting Cheyne Stokes Respiration (CSR). CSR is an out of control pattern of periodic breathing, associated with increased risk of mortality, which occurs in about one third of severe CHF patients when they are asleep. ResMed's AutoSet CS device corrects this detrimental breathing pattern and thereby improves the general well-being of patients as well as their heart function.
Although only 6 patients were studied in this trial, they all had severe CHF. After 6 months of treatment with AutoSet CS the severity of the patients' CSR was reduced by approximately 90%, with highly significant concomitant improvements in exercise capacity and oxygen uptake, and heart-related well-being. There were reductions of over 60% in the duration of daytime naps and an almost 60% reduction in nocturia, or the frequency of urination associated with disturbed sleep. All patients tolerated the treatment well, using the device for an average of over 6 hours per night. Dr. Teschler concluded that 6 months of AutoSet CS treatment, in CHF patients exhibiting CSR, greatly improves both exercise capacity and cardiac specific quality of life.
Later this week at the German Cardiology Society meeting in Ulm, Drs. Teschler and Erbel, from the University of Essen, are also presenting preliminary data showing a significant positive impact of AutoSet CS treatment on reducing night-time arrhythmias and ectopic heart beats. ResMed's Chairman and CEO, Peter C. Farrell, Ph.D., commented: "We are very encouraged by these exciting results. There are approximately 5 million CHF sufferers in the U.S. alone and about 20%, generally the most severely affected patients, have CSR or central sleep apnea. Many of the remainder exhibit obstructive sleep apnea which can also be treated with ResMed's AutoSet CS or other ResMed devices such as our AutoSet T™."
ResMed's AutoSet CS device is being sold in limited quantities outside the U.S. and data are being gathered in the U.S. to support FDA approval. ResMed is a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of medical equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing, selling its products in over 60 countries.
