Based on consistent earnings per share growth and share price strength, ResMed was recognized yesterday by Investor's Business Daily (IBD) as the top performing medical company in the "medical products" category for the United States. ResMed is a manufacturer and developer of products to treat sleep-disordered breathing, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
"It is extremely gratifying for ResMed to have been named as the top U.S. medical products company by IBD. This reflects both excellent teamwork and the strong commitment and performance of all ResMed staff," said Peter C. Farrell, Ph.D., ResMed founder and CEO.
ResMed's Ultra Mirage™ mask was selected as one of the most popular products with home health care dealers in 2000, according to the readers of trade journal HomeCare Magazine. While there are numerous homecare products and other masks on the market, ResMed's Ultra Mirage mask came in second on the list of the "Top Products of 2000." The results were based on the level of requests the magazine received for more information about a particular product.
The Ultra Mirage mask is used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which affects approximately 10 percent of the population, and has been directly linked to increased risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke as reported in major medical publications such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
People with OSA repeatedly stop breathing during sleep due to a temporary collapse of the upper airway. A sufferer stops breathing for ten seconds or more, sometimes several hundred times, during six to eight hours of sleep.
The gold standard for OSA treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which keeps a person's airway open while sleeping, preventing the hundreds of mini-arousals that are caused when the sufferers subconsciously recognize they are not breathing and force themselves to awaken briefly. These mini-arousals lead to excessive tiredness during the day, notwithstanding the increased risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke. The CPAP machine is connected through tubing to a mask, such as ResMed's Ultra Mirage mask, which is worn over the nose. The Ultra Mirage mask's design features a patented, double-layer cushion covered by a silicone membrane, which virtually eliminates air leaks and pressure on the bridge of the nose, and makes the mask more comfortable to wear.
"I was ready to give up on the CPAP until I went to a user support group meeting and found your mask. I think it saved my life!" writes a patient, adding credibility to the acknowledgment of HomeCare Magazine's ranking.
"We designed the Ultra mask with the specific goal of improving both patient comfort and compliance," said Peter C. Farrell. "The fact that our mask ranks in the top two of all products requested by home healthcare dealers is appropriate recognition of our ability to develop the highest quality products for the treatment of OSA."
ResMed is a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of medical equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing, selling a comprehensive range of products in over 50 countries
