Elizabeth Mitler is a registered nurse who ran the central office of The Association of Sleep Disorders Centers (now known as The American Academy of Sleep Medicine) for 10 years. Prompted by the many questions she was asked, she wrote the first edition '101 Questions' in 1986. Over the intervening years, her book has evolved through six editions into one of the most popular introductions to sleep in the world.
Merrill M. Mitler is professor of Neuropharmacology at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at The University of California, San Diego. He also serves as Director of Research for Pacific Sleep Medicine Services with laboratories in Los Angeles, San Diego, Encino and Redlands, California. Dr. Mitler earned Masters and Doctorate degrees in Psychology at Michigan State University and received Post-doctoral training in sleep physiology and pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Recipient of many awards and NIH grants, he is an internationally-known researcher and authority on sleep physiology and pathology. Dr. Mitler is most recognized for his work on the measurement and treatment of abnormal sleepiness. He is a leading researcher and writer on the relationship between public safety and man's biologic need for sleep. He has written over 200 articles for professional and scientific journals, a textbook entitled, Sleep: A Scientific Perspective, and has over 30 years of experience in the field of sleep and sleep disorders.
