The Promise of Sleep : A Pioneer in Sleep Medicine Explores the Vital Connection Between Health, Happiness, and a Good Night's Sleep
"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In The Promise of Sleep, Dr. Dement aims to remedy that by making the latest sleep information accessible to health professionals and lay readers. He describes the sleep cycle and gives a short history of sleep research. Then he dives into clear and detailed explanations of concepts and conditions we've all heard about, but that few of us understand: sleep debt, biological clock, circadian rhythm, insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy.
He discusses why we need sleep (sounds obvious, but it isn't) and the role of dreams. After 300 pages of sleep facts, Dr. Dement teaches you how to "reclaim healthy sleep" in your own life. You learn to assess your personal sleep situation by keeping a sleep diary, measuring your sleep debt, and evaluating your risk of sleep disorders; find appropriate treatment; manage sleep crises; and adopt a "sleep-smart lifestyle." A three-week "sleep camp" program at the end helps you put all the strategies together. This book will put you to sleep--and that's meant as praise! Available in Hardcover, Paperback, Audio Cassette

Available in Hardcover and Paperback
Power Sleep: The Revolutionary Program That Prepares Your Mind for Peak Performance
Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your current station in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled "Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsy office workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (which may reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34 years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knows how to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion is that most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it in slowly and then sleep on it. Available in Hardcover, Paperback, Audio Cassette
Sleep Thieves: An Eye-Opening Exploration into the Science and Mysteries of Sleep
Coren conveys a vast amount of information about sleep with a lively feeling for the research that amassed it. He explores the basic body cycles and their effects on sleep, and he describes the human "internal clock" and the confusions arising from adjusting its 25-hour cycle to the requirements of the 24-hour day. His main theme, though, is sleep deprivation. The average person should sleep between 9 1/2 and 10 hours a night, it seems--a need Coren stresses by citing many effects of lessened sleep time, one of the most striking of which is the increase in fatal accidents during the days following the spring change to daylight saving time (there is a corresponding decrease when standard time resumes in the fall). As some frightening stories Coren tells attest, long-distance truck drivers, medical interns and residents, and nuclear plant workers especially suffer from lessened sleep. As Coren stresses elsewhere, sleep is also a vital factor in the body's ability to fight off disease. Available in Paperback

The Twenty-Four Hour Society: Understanding Human Limits in a World That Never Stops
Today's sophisticated technology and integrated global economy have led to great advances but have failed to consider human limitations. The Chernobyl explosion, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, Three Mile Island, and tens of thousands of smaller accidents, as well as billions of dollars of productivity losses, were the result of human fatigue. Dr. Moore-Ede brings together the latest scientific findings and presents an array of management tools and technologies that monitor alertness and performance impairment. He shows how to rethink work schedules, manage information flow and improve working environments.
Common sense, and millions of years of evolutionary history, tell us that people are more prone to error when their natural cycles of sleeping and waking are disrupted. Yet our society, driven by the pace of high-tech communications and the economic pressures of international competition, increasingly is tempting fate as we become ever more committed to round-the-clock performance.
