Respironics ComfortLite™ Nasal Mask Patient Preference Trial Summary

Background

Improper selection and fit of a mask is commonly the most significant barrier to patient compliance with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy in the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Due to personal preferences, claustrophobia, or overall discomfort, many patients find it difficult or impossible to comply with CPAP therapy due to dissatisfaction with their current mask.

Respironics' new ComfortLite is a smaller, lighter mask with the flexibility of two nasal interface options for patients preferring or requiring an alternative to traditional nasal masks. The unique mask and headgear system minimizes facial contact and reduces pressure points.

Patient Preference Trial

A patient preference trial was conducted to evaluate the ComfortLite with both the Direct Seal™ and Simple Cushion™ options available with the mask. The trial consisted of 41 current patients who had been receiving CPAP therapy through various mask types, styles and brands. Over half of the participants were users of the leading competitive pillows-based mask. All participants received an appropriately sized ComfortLite and a user instruction manual. They were asked to evaluate ComfortLite over a period of 2 weeks with an emphasis on comparing ComfortLite to their current mask.

Trial Results

Trial participants were asked to rate the ComfortLite better, the same, or worse than their current masks across several dimensions. These dimensions included fit, seal, comfort, stability, adjustability, ease of use, noise level, and headgear.
