Overall Impressions

When the brand released its products to the public, Helix was quickly dubbed a mattress of the future Trusted Source The Bespoke Mattress of the Future Is Here (And It's Really Damn Cozy) | GQ A next-gen mattress startup—believe us, we never thought we’d write that either—wants to bring comfort to a whole new level. www.gq.com . Their website offered a quiz to match you with the best mattress in their line for your sleeping position, body type, weight, and more.

The Helix Midnight Mattress is a hybrid option that offers the best of both worlds. We dive deep into all the different features of this mattress in this section to give you a better idea of who this mattress is for and whether it’s the right fit for your bedroom.

Firmness

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Similar to the Moonlight, the Dusk is a bouncier, more reactive medium feel mattress. It is just slightly firmer than the Midnight, so its great for back and stomach sleepers.

As a hybrid mattress, the Helix Midnight spots medium firmness. This makes it ideal for side-sleepers specifically, as the firmness provides great support and pressure relief in key areas like the hips, knees, and back.

The firmness of the Helix Midnight mattress is best for side-sleepers Trusted Source Best mattress for side sleepers: Helix's unique mattresses provide lumbar support for side sleepers | CNN Underscored Helix has created a specialized mattress just for side sleepers, which is soft to the touch design and offers lumbar support and affordable pricing. We think it’s the best mattress overall for side sleepers. us.cnn.com , so if you sleep on your back or stomach, this might not be the best option for you. For back and stomach sleepers, the Helix Dusk is a great option as it’s a hybrid mattress as well, but it’s specifically designed to support back sleepers.

Motion transfer

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Motion isolation may offer a better sleeping environment to those who wake up easily in response to movement.

The support layer of the Helix Midnight cradles your body. It’s made of individually wrapped coils, which are very comfortable for side sleepers when lying down. This limits motion transfer, which helps you stay put while sleeping, though it admittedly lacks edge support.

One of the reasons the Helix Midnight is a popular option for couples is that it limits motion transfer. This is great for light sleepers who are easily awoken by motion transfer on the bed. Another reason this mattress is highly sought-after is the fact that it still provides adequate bounce and support without a lot of motion transfer.

Temperature regulation

The Helix Midnight features a hybrid and futuristic construction. One of the main praises for this mattress is how well it regulates temperature. And when making this mattress, a primary consideration was keeping people cool and comfortable when sleeping. It’s very rare for people to feel overheated on the Helix Midnight, which is a huge point in its favor.

A major component of this mattress is the 8-inch layer of coils. Not only does this layer provide comfort and support, but it allows for better airflow through the mattress. This makes it very cool, which is great for just about any sleeper out there. As a modern mattress, the Helix Midnight incorporates a lot of modern features, and a major one of these features is temperature regulation.

Another reason for the cool feel of the Helix Midnight is the top layer. The top layer is very breathable and will always be cool to the touch. If your current mattress has you shifting and sweating at night, the Helix Midnight offers a very welcome shift.

Pressure relief

The Helix Midnight offers deep and intense pressure relief. This is one of the main reasons people point to it as the best mid-range mattress for side-sleepers out there. The slight cradling of the top layer offers great pressure relief in the hips, knees, and back, which makes it ideal for side sleepers.

Customers also report great pressure relief on the shoulders when sleeping on the Helix Midnight. A common term used to describe the pressure relief of the Helix Midnight is cozy, which we found incredibly accurate. With that said, if you want more pressure relief, you can pair this mattress with an additional mattress topper.

Off-gassing

When you open the packaging of the Helix Midnight, you’ll probably end up hearing slight wheezing. One this we did notice is that upon opening the vacuum seal, the mattress didn’t release any foul or concerning odor. This is normal when mattresses are vacuum-sealed, so that’s nothing to worry about.

While we didn’t notice an off-gassing odor, other customers did. Some people reported a very slight off-gassing odor. With that said, it isn’t as intense as some of the cheaper options on the market, and the odor is said to dissipate within a few hours anyway.

Sex

A primary feature of Helix mattresses is their coil cores. This gives a fair amount of bounce and support, making it great for sex. With that said, a slight bounce can aid or hinder intimacy, depending on the couple. The Midnight offers the most bounce among the Helix range, so you might find it hard to move around when trying to get intimate with your significant other.

It’s reported that the Helix Dawn mattress is much easier for couples to move around in a while, still offering the same spring and bounce off other Helix mattresses.

Noise

Despite having coil cores, the Helix Midnight mattresses aren’t noisy at all. The noise on the Helix Midnight is akin to any hybrid mattress in its price range and doesn’t really stand out. With that said, movement on the bed won’t produce much, if any, noise at all, which is what makes this mattress a great option for couples as well.

Edge Support

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Edge support refers to the amount of resistance that a mattress can provide around its edges.

As we mentioned earlier, the Helix Midnight offers a cradling feel. This offers a decent amount of edge support, although we noticed that it’s more for limiting motion transfer. This model has decent edge support, partly because of the top layer and the coil cores. However, we have to admit that we did find the edge support of the Helix Midnight slightly lacking and needing some improvement.

The Construction

The comfort of a mattress lies in its construction. When shopping for a new mattress, it’s very important to understand what goes into the construction. That way, it’s much easier to understand who the mattress is for and whether it will be a good investment for you.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the Helix Midnight mattress’ construction.

Materials

The Helix Midnight’s layers are made out of foam. One layer is made of Memory Plus Foam, while the other is made of both Helix dynamic foam and high-quality polyfoam. This provides a whole lot of support and comfort for anyone sleeping on the surface.

Layers

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Memory Plus Foam, Helix Dynamic Foam and High-Grade Polyfoam.

As a hybrid mattress, the Helix Midnight consists of a bunch of different layers. As mentioned earlier, two of these layers are made with foam. However, in between, that is a core layer of coils. This is what provides the mattress with bounce and extra support. The reason many people feel cradled and cozy when sleeping on the Helix Midnight is because of these coils.

The base layer of this mattress is the coil layer. These coils sit on a bed of polyfoam. On top of that is the comfort layer made of Memory Plus Foam, then the cover which is made of polyester.

The coil layer is 8″ deep, which comprises a large chunk of this 12″ mattress. This is what makes this an incredibly comfortable mattress, especially for side sleepers.

Cover

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Two-touch design and soft-touch cover, which also provides a cooling effect.

On top of all the layers of the Helix Midnight is a cozy polyester cover designed to stay cool. The cover allows for great airflow within the mattress, giving you great temperature control. With the cover on this mattress, you’ll never feel overheated whether you’re taking an afternoon nap or getting your regular beauty rest.

Certifications

One of the biggest advantages of the Helix Midnight is that it contains no hazardous and dangerous materials. You can expect and rest assured that if you get a Helix Midnight mattress, you don’t have to deal with heavy metals, PDBE flame retardants, harmful chemicals, or ozone depleters. The Helix Mattress is proudly made of Certi-PUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified materials.

Warranty and Sleep Trial

The Helix Midnight is part of their standard mattress line. Standard Helix mattresses such as the Midnight and the Dawn come with a 10-year warranty. The warranty covers any manufacturing defects which may come in the form of split foam, 1″ indentations and other assembly defects. The warranty only applies to the original owner that bought the mattress from an authorized supplier. However, the warranty doesn’t cover the normal softening of the mattress and any other damages caused by abuse or misuse.

The customer is required to return the mattress at their own expense. If Helix finds a defect, they will reimburse you up to $100 for shipping and decide whether to repair or replace the mattress. Depending on one when and where you buy the mattress, additional terms and conditions may also apply.

Another advantage of the Helix Midnight is that you have a 100-night sleep trial. The window starts on the day you purchase the mattress, and there’s a required 30-night break-in period that you have to finish before the mattress is eligible for return.

When returning a Helix Mattress, the customer is eligible for a full refund of their receipt. There will be someone sent to your home to pick up the mattress, and the offer is only good for two returns for each customer.

Price Tag

Helix is known for its competitive pricing for mattresses. When you shop from the standard Helix line, you’re getting mid-range mattresses with great value. The Helix Midnight is no exception. The twin-sized Helix Midnight starts at $699, while the California King costs up to $1449. A hybrid mattress in a box will usually cost a bit more than this, which is what makes Midnight’s price very competitive.

It’s definitely much cheaper than an all-foam mattress and also offers a wide range of benefits. The Helix mattresses are known to be slightly cheaper than its competitors. For example, the Helix Midnight comes in at around $1,099, which is significantly cheaper than the Casper Original and the Dream Cloud.

On top of that, if you time your purchase right, you can even get a discount of around $100-$200. Helix regularly marks down the price of their mattresses, so if you decide to buy at the right time, you can get significant discounts and save a lot of money.

Who does it suit best?

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Best for side sleepers or those who toss and turn at night. The middle layers of the mattress are designed to support your body contours.

There is no one definitive “best mattress” out there. This is because every sleeper has their own set of needs and preferences that the mattress needs to meet. While the Helix Midnight might be a great pick for a lot of people, it might not be the best option for others.

As mentioned earlier, the Helix Midnight works best for side-sleepers, but does it also suit other sleepers?

Stomach Sleepers

If there’s one type of sleeper, this mattress definitely isn’t for its stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers require a firm mattress and thin or no pillow at all for proper support when sleeping. The Helix Midnight is a fairly firm mattress, but it’s still way too soft to offer proper support for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

If you’re a side sleeper, the Helix Midnight is a great option for you. This is a medium-firm, hybrid mattress. It offers a cradling effect when sleeping on your side, limits motion transfer, and most of all, it offers great pressure relief on the lower back, shoulders, hips, and knees, which are all crucial for side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

If you sleep on your back, you need a fair amount of support and not that much cushioning. You don’t need a mattress as firm as those for stomach sleepers, but the Helix Midnight might still be too soft for you. For back sleepers, we would better recommend models such as the Helix Dusk, which are a bit more firm than the Midnight model.

Combination Sleepers

If you find yourself sleeping on your side most of the time and occasionally shifting to your back, the Helix Midnight would be a great option. However, keep in mind, if you spend most of your time on your back or stomach, this mattress will be a bit too soft for you, which is why we mostly recommend this mattress for side sleepers.

Pain Relief Performance

If you’re a side sleeper dealing with pain in certain areas of your body, the Helix Midnight could be a huge help. Let’s take a look at how the Helix Midnight performs in terms of pain relief.

Back Pain

If you have back pain, the semi-firm construction of the Helix Midnight is a great option. Since it offers a lot of support on the lower back, side-sleepers can experience great pressure relief with this mattress. However, for stomach sleepers, you might experience the opposite since the mattress is a bit on the softer side of things.

Hip Pain

Again, if you sleep on your side, the Helix Midnight offers great relief on your hips. Hip pain can lead to a lot of other mobility issues down the line, and you can relieve your hip pain if you sleep on the Helix Midnight.

Shoulder Pain

Customers report a slight pressure relief on the shoulders with the Helix Midnight. The shoulders can hold on to a lot of stress and pressure, which is what makes the Helix Midnight a great option for people who experience pain and pressure in that area.

Advantages and Disadvantages

PROS CONS
●  A great option for side sleepers and back sleepers between 130-230 pounds

Other Helix Mattress Options

Different people require different mattresses. Since the Helix Midnight is on the softer side of the spectrum, it’s best of side sleepers. It can also be good for back sleepers as long as they weigh between 130-230 pounds. If you’re below 130 pounds, this is a great mattress for you regardless of sleeping position.

But if you don’t fall in these categories, here are a couple of other Helix Standard Mattresses that could be the right fit for you.

Helix Sunset

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Best for side sleepers or those that toss and turn at night. The middle layers of the mattress are designed to support your body contours.

The Helix Sunset is one of the softest in the Helix line. It contains the same layers as you’ll find on the Helix Midnight. However, the main difference is in the softness. On the Helix scale, the Sunset measures between 2-3, making it ideal for side sleepers and lighter people.

Pros:

  • Best for side sleepers
  • Ideal for people below 130 pounds
  • Offers a cradling feeling
  • Very soft

Cons:

  • Too soft for many people
  • Customers above 130 pounds report sinking into the mattress

Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight is the mattress we reviewed in this list. It’s a semi-firm mattress that’s right in the middle of the firmness scale, making it a great option for side sleepers.

Pros:

  • A great option for side sleepers and back sleepers between 130-230 pounds
  • Offers great temperature control, keeping you cool the whole night through
  • Has a slight bounce to it
  • Offers a cradling feeling for side-sleepers

Cons:

  • Doesn’t offer the best edge support
  • Too soft for stomach sleepers

Helix Dusk

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Best for back or stomach sleepers and couples with different preferences. Even support throughout the layers of the mattress to provide perfect loft.

Most Helix Dusk reviews state that it’s a great option for back or stomach sleepers. While it’s a semi-firm mattress like the Midnight, it is a bit firmer, as reported by some customers. This makes it better for back and stomach sleepers, though it’s best for people who weigh below 250 pounds.

Pros:

  • More firm than the Helix Midnight
  • Limits motion transfer
  • Ideal for combination sleepers
  • Tailored for back and side-sleeping

Cons:

  • Might be too firm for some

Helix Twilight

Moving on, we have one of the firmer Helix mattresses out there. The Twilight measures in between 8-9 on the firmness scale, making it a great option for stomach sleepers. Since it’s a firmer mattress, professional Helix Twilight reviews state that it’s great for heavier individuals and stomach and back sleepers.

Pros:

  • One of the firmest Helix mattresses
  • Great for back and stomach sleepers
  • Ideal for heavier people
  • Great at limiting motion transfer

Cons:

  • Not ideal for side sleepers
  • Some people find it too firm

Helix Dawn

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Firmer top layers of the mattress to give you the firm feel you need – no sink or give. Comfortable, yet solid under your body.

The Dawn is another firm Helix mattress, making it ideal for most back and stomach sleepers. It’s a very firm mattress, which is why Helix Dawn reviews find the mattress less than ideal for lighter people and side sleepers.

Pros:

  • Firm and offers great support
  • Ideal for back and stomach sleepers
  • Great for heavier individuals
  • Good for combinations sleepers

Cons:

  • Too firm for some people
  • Not great for lighter individuals

Helix Plus

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

13″ hybrid mattress with an additional support layer and the highest density foam to provide the right comfort, firmer support, and durability for heavier people and bigger sleepers.

What sets the Helix Plus apart is its depth. Unlike the other standard models, the Helix Plus has a mattress depth of 13 inches, giving you a bit more comfort. It’s a medium-firm mattress, which makes it great for side sleepers and lighter individuals. The thickness also makes it great for heavy back sleepers, though if you’re a heavier individual who sleeps on their side or stomach, you’ll still need a firmer mattress.

Pros:

  • Great for heavy back sleepers
  • Good for side-sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds
  • Thicker than other Helix mattresses
  • Offers more support

Cons:

  • Not great for heavy side and stomach sleepers
  • On the pricier side

Helix Kids

As the name suggests, this is the Helix mattress for children. If you read any Helix Kids review, you’ll understand why it’s one of the best children’s mattresses out there. It offers more coils in the core, giving more bounce and support, and only comes in smaller sizes.

Pros:

  • Specifically designed for kids
  • Offers lots of support and bounce
  • Comes in kid-friendly sizes

Cons:

  • No queen-sized options for larger children

Helix Luxe Options

If you’re willing to invest more money in your mattress, the Helix Luxe collection is a great option for you. These models have zoned coil support, which means the coils are placed in areas that need additional support, such as the shoulders and back. And while they are more expensive, they do come with a gel-infused extra comfort layer, providing much more support than their regular mattresses.

Here are some of the Helix Luxe options that might be just what you need in your bedroom:

Twin; Twin XL; Full; Queen; King; Ca King

Helix Dawn Luxe 7.5-9.5 8” support unit + 6 layers

Twin; Twin XL; Full; Queen; King; Ca King

Helix Sunset Luxe

We’ll start with a Helix Sunset Luxe review. This is the softest of the luxe line, and it contains 8″ coil support and 6 layers. This is more layers than the standard collection and is a big reason this collection costs a bit more. However, one of these additional layers is a gel-infused comfort layer which can keep you cool, comfortable, and supported the whole night through.

While the specs might make it seem like this is just a standard model with additional layers, the science is more specific than that. The Helix Sunset Luxe comes with targeted support, which makes it better for side sleepers and lightweight back sleepers out there

But while this is a luxe model, keep in mind that it’s still very soft. So, if you’re a heavier individual or you sleep on your stomach, there’s a high chance you’ll find this mattress a bit too soft for your needs.

Pros:

  • Very soft and ideal for lightweight people
  • Great for side sleepers below 130 pounds
  • Offers a cradling feeling
  • Feels very comfortable
  • Stays cool even during warmer nights

Cons:

  • Not ideal for heavier people
  • Stomach sleepers and back sleepers will not enjoy this mattress

Helix Moonlight Luxe

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Softer top layers of the mattress to give you that soft, lavish plush comfort you love – like sinking into a cloud.

The Helix Moonlight Luxe is another one of the softer Helix mattresses out there. According to Helix Moonlight Luxe reviews, this is one of the best mattresses for lightweight people out there. Since it’s very soft, you get a combination of a cradling feeling and support if you’re below 130 pounds.

With that said, heavier individuals might feel like they sink into the mattress, which is far from ideal. When you sink into the mattress, this can result in a lot of pain and pressure in certain areas of the body. For this reason, we don’t recommend this mattress for back and stomach sleepers either.

But if you’re a lightweight side-sleeper, this is one of the best mattresses on the market for you.

Pros:

  • A very soft and comfortable mattress
  • Great for side sleepers below 130 pounds
  • Offers a cradling feeling
  • Comes with zonal support

Cons:

  • Not ideal for heavier people
  • Not great for stomach and back sleepers

Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Midnight Mattress Review - Next Level of Comfort (Fall 2022)

Not too firm, not too soft at the top of your mattress. Great for couples with different feel preferences.

Just like the standard Helix Midnight, Helix Midnight Luxe Reviews point to this as one of the best mattresses for side-sleepers. If you’re decided on getting the Helix Moonlight, you might still want to check out the Moonlight Luxe and see if you can afford the additional price as it will be worth it in the long run.

Side sleepers need additional support, particularly in the hips, lower back, and knees. The Helix Moonlight Luxe is specifically designed to support these areas using the coils, making it a great overall option for side sleepers. And since it’s soft but still on the firmer side, it’s ideal for sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.

With that said, if you sleep on your stomach, this mattress will still be too soft for you. In fact, back sleepers who are on the heavier side might find this mattress too soft as well. So, if you’re a heavier individual who sleeps on your back, you might want to consider some of the other Helix models out there.

Pros:

  • Great for side-sleepers
  • Ideal for back and combination sleepers below 230 pounds
  • Great for any sleeper below 130 pounds
  • Offers a slight cradling feel

Cons:

  • Not ideal for heavier individuals
  • Not good for stomach sleepers

Helix Dusk Luxe

The Helix Dusk Luxe offers more support than the other earlier mentioned models. In most Helix Dusk Luxe reviews, people point to the fact that it offers a whole lot of support, especially for back and stomach sleepers. This is because the Helix Dusk Luxe has the same firmness as the Midnight Luxe but is specifically designed and tailored for people who sleep on their backs and stomach.

The Helix Dusk Luxe comes with the same gel-infused layer and premium features that garner a higher price tag as a Luxe model. While it may be a more significant investment than the standard Dusk model, it is worth every single penny.

Pros:

  • Offers great support
  • Ideal for back and stomach sleepers
  • Still offers decent comfort for stomach sleepers
  • Stays cool during warm nights

Cons:

  • Not the best for lightweight people
  • Doesn’t offer a cradling feeling

Helix Twilight Luxe

The Helix Twighlight Luxe is comfortably in the more firm end of the spectrum. With a firmness rating between 7.5-9.5, it’s one of the firmest Helix mattresses you can get. When you read or go through a Helix Twilight Luxe, there’s a high chance it will recommend the mattress for back and stomach sleepers. This is very true since if you sleep on your back or stomach, you need the additional support of a firm mattress to avoid pressure in certain joints and muscle groups.

The downside to this firm mattress though is that you won’t enjoy it if you’re a lightweight person. Instead of feeling support, certain lightweight customers report feeling like the mattress is pressing up against them instead. So, if you’re a lightweight person or someone who enjoys being cradled by the mattress, the Helix Twilight Luxe may seem too firm for you.

Pros:

  • Great for heavier sleepers
  • Designed for stomach and back sleepers
  • Offers a whole lot of support

Cons:

  • Not ideal for lightweight sleepers
  • Doesn’t cradle you in your sleep

Helix Dawn Luxe

Just like with the previous entry, Helix Dawn Luxe’s reviews state that this mattress is best for stomach or back sleepers. As another one of the firm mattresses from Helix, the Dawn Luxe offers a whole lot of support. So, if you need pressure relief on your back and shoulders when you sleep, the construction of this model is designed for that specific purpose.

Just like other Luxe models, it has a gel-infused layer and zonal support. This gives off way more comfort than the standard models and is the main reason for the large price discrepancy. All of the coils in this model are individually wrapped, ensuring consistency and top-tier support.

The main problem with firm mattresses is that they don’t offer a lot of support for lightweight people or side-sleepers. If you’re lightweight or a side-sleeper, the best mattress for you is one that cradles you in your sleep. The Helix Dawn Luxe is way too firm to do that, so this is really only best for heavy back and stomach sleepers.

Pros:

  • A great option for heavier people
  • Great for stomach and back sleepers
  • Offers a whole lot of support
  • Built-in gel-infused layer and zonal support
  • Individually wrapped coils

Cons:

  • Not great for side sleepers
  • Not great for lightweight people

Conclusion

And there you have it, a definitive end to this deep dive into the Helix Midnight mattress. If you go on the market today, you’ll find that Helix offers some of the most competitive prices for its hybrid mattresses. With the Helix Midnight, you can save up to $200 compared to buying other models of the same caliber.

On top of that, Helix is known for offering tons of discounts and sales. Their website frequently offers discount codes for first-time buyers, so if you time your purchase properly, you could save even more money. The Helix Midnight is a great mattress for lightweight people and side-sleepers as the design is tailor-made for these types of sleepers.

To wrap up this Helix Midnight mattress review, all we have to say is that this mattress offers great value for the price. In its range, it can beat out models on the more expensive side of the spectrum and could be the secret to getting a consistent good night’s sleep.
