Did you know that a bamboo topper can easily save you from the heat on those hot and humid summer nights? And it’s also a blessing for people with itchy or sensitive skin, as well as for allergy sufferers. But of course, it’s important to choose a high-quality product from a trusted brand!
But how to know that you’re getting a real deal? We’ve analyzed the most popular toppers on the market and narrowed down the most important features for you. Our buying guide explains how material quality, density, and ease of caring for the product will contribute to your comfort and well-being. Check out our insightful article to learn more!
The subrtex Bed Mattress Topper is a 3 inch, 3.5-pound density topper. The topper is equipped with a bamboo rayon cover, an enhancing sleep mesh backing that could keep the topper from shifting during the night. To secure the topper, it comes with adjustable elastic straps that can fit under your mattress. The straps have great elasticity. You can adjust the length of them to fit your mattress from moving.
The topper is made of 3.5 pounds density gel-infused memory foam with surface machinery technique which makes the surface smoother. It is ideal for hot sleepers and people who dislike allergens.
What makes it stand out?
We liked that the topper has a ventilated design which lets the air flow through. So, with the cover also made from bamboo rayon, this will ensure you can sleep cool. Besides, the bamboo cover of this topper is machine washable, and the product is certified by CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX, the two of the best certifying organizations with the strictest standards of manufacturing.
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
We recommend that you unroll the topper for at least 24 hours so the topper can relieve itself, regain its original shape, and let off the typical off-gassing smell that most memory foam bedding items are known for.
This is a mattress topper that is obtainable in King, Queen, and Full sizes. It came with a mattress protector and had a cooling egg crate design, something which Sweet Night says enhances the supporting and cooling properties of the gel memory foam filling. According to the manufacturer, this design ensures excellent ventilation with targeted support that relieves pressure points. It has a bamboo fiber cover which is natural and hypoallergenic.
The mattress topper has a good nice supportive layer of memory foam and a cover made from natural bamboo fiber. So, it’s a good call for those who want a topper that can help them sleep cool, wick moisture, and that is hypoallergenic. It’s an ideal choice for you if you have a mattress that is a little bit too soft as the topper is not too firm or too soft.
Why did it make our list?
What we liked about this one is that it has an awesome soft zippered cover that is easy to remove and wash if you need to. And then it has a cooling foam in the core. We also liked the egg carton support, but they're a lot closer together than a lot of other ones we've seen. We also liked that it comes with a protector for your mattress.
What is not ideal about it?
It would have been better appreciated by sleepers if Sweet Night produced a softer version of this. Some solid side sleepers don't find it comfortable; they wished it was softer. Unfortunately, this isn't a topper for side sleepers.
The ExceptionalSheets product is a mattress pad that composes of cotton and polyester filling with a bamboo rayon cover. The mattress pad has a fitted skirt with a removable pillow top pad.
As the cover is made from a bamboo synthetic material, it allows air to naturally breathe through the mattress pads. So, for that reason, it keeps you cool during the summer, but it also keeps you warm during the winter.
What makes it special?
The backing is made from 50% cotton and a 50% polyester material, so it's quite durable. We liked that it is very easy to put on the mattress. The product comes with a hundred percent money-back guarantee, and that's great, especially if you're ordering online. It's 100% hypoallergenic, so if you have allergies or sensitivities to dust mites, it is a great product.
What cons did we find?
One thing we didn't quite like about the topper was the very thin sides. It was an immediate concern when putting it on the mattress as it does seem like it would rip easily. Maintaining this pad/topper can be difficult. ExceptionalSheets doesn't recommend machines washing it. So, the only option you have is to just clean it by hand when you see spots or stains on it. We've seen situations where the pad ripped immediately while machine washing it.
The Puffy mattress topper is made from 40% bamboo and 60% polyester. The topper has a zipper designed around the cover so you can remove the core and clean the cover. This Puffy mattress helps reduce pressure points in your body and properly aligns to your spine while sleeping. It has very deep pockets on all four corners.
It comes in two different firmness levels: the firm or the soft. If you have a firm bed, you can get a soft topper, and if you have a soft bed, you can get a firm topper. It’s very cool to the touch when you lay down on it. It’s also 100 percent free of chemicals.
What stands out?
One of the best things we liked about the topper is its 101-night trial guarantee. Like all the Puffy products, it has a lifetime warranty. It is also OEKO-Tex certified, which is a certification that assures users that there are no harsh chemicals used in the product.
What cons did we manage to find?
This is a high-end topper, and it's a little bit expensive, but you will get what you pay for.
This mattress topper is a 3-inch and a half-pound density topper in which a surface machining technique is used to drill ventilated holes throughout it, so you won’t sleep as hot as you will in traditional memory foam.
It has a good bamboo rayon cover and a mesh backing to keep it from shifting. And on top of that, they even built a strap. This has been upgraded to an adjustable strap that, no matter how deep your mattress is, you can lift it and keep the topper from moving during the night when you shift.
The King weighs more than 40 pounds which is not very common. In terms of quality, one important variable in toppers is their weight, and that’s very much a function of how long they last and typically the quality of sleep you get as well as the support and comfort that you’ll get from it.
What are our favorite features?
Edilly has done a lot of research to try to strike a balance between comfort and support, but they understand that they can't possibly satisfy everyone. So, they've extended their refund period from 30 days which is typical for Amazon, to 60 days. Besides this, the product comes with a decade of warranty coverage, and it's sold for a very low price.
What could be better?
The topper is like a small flat mattress. First, after unpacking, you have to let the topper release itself, come back to its original shape, and let the off-gassing smell fade away. We typically recommend around 24 hours for this to take place.
Things to Consider
The bamboo mattress topper is an item that will protect your mattress while providing you with the comfort you need (especially if your mattress is too firm). If you have back pain or you have problems with allergies, your doctor will probably advise you to get this. Also, if you sleep as a couple with a large weight gap, the mattress topper will keep the surface of the bed balanced. In this section, we will tell you everything you need to know about the benefits of a bamboo topper and tell you how to choose one.
Advantages of Bamboo Mattress Toppers
The bamboo-based Trusted SourceBamboo as an emerging source of raw material for household and building products :: BioResources bioresources.cnr.ncsu.edu toppers are usually organic or have low chemical treatment. Hence, they are ideal for people who are very sensitive to dust mites and other chemicals used for the manufacture of some mattress toppers and mattresses. We know that the majority of major mattress brands still use the same manufacturing processes as a few years ago, and although they have the Oeko-Tex or CERTIPUR US label, there are still a lot of potentially allergenic substances for some people.
The advantage of bamboo mattress toppers is that bamboo has hypoallergenic properties.
Most toppers in this category are combined with foams (shape memory or viscoelastic) to make a soft and pleasant topper for the general public. However, only the ticking will be bamboo (which is not a problem) because you are in direct contact with the ticking and not the foam (this is why we also find some luxury memory foam mattresses with bamboo ticking). Here are the other benefits of mattress toppers with a bamboo fiber cover:
Softness: The natural bamboo fiber covers offer extreme softness with a very pleasant touch.
Breathable: This type of cover also offers highly breathable properties, allowing moisture to escape more easily. You will therefore be able to avoid sleeping hot at night.
Antiperspirant: These breathable properties give you nights without overheating by preventing perspiration and the proliferation of bacteria.
Hypoallergenic: The bamboo mattress toppers are antiallergic; the bamboo viscose cover relieves allergies while you sleep and prevents irritation caused by dust mites.
Features to consider before you buy a bamboo mattress topper
Below, we will see some of the features to watch out for in a bamboo mattress topper and the different variables to keep in check.
The toppers are available in all common mattress sizes, in King, Queen, California King, Full, Twin, and Twin XL sizes. So, you will be able to find a suitable base for your mattress in standard or extra size. Not all toppers come in these sizes, so you will have to find a topper that fits your bed. However, mattress toppers such as the subrtex Bed Mattress Topper, ExceptionalSheets Mattress Pad, and the Puffy Mattress Topper all come in these sizes mentioned earlier.
For single beds, sizes of 90 x 200 and 140 x 200 centimeters are the right choice. For double or full beds, 160 x 200 or 180 x 200 centimeters are suitable.
You can also combine two 90 x 200-centimeter pads if you have two separate mattresses in the double bed. Special sizes with 200 x 200 and 220 x 200 centimeters or mattress protectors with an excess length of 210 and 220 centimeters are also available in stores. Please note that most toppers are designed for mattress thicknesses between 25 and 30 centimeters.
The topper usually has three layers or zone: the top cover, the filling or core, and the under-cover. The covers and the filling are usually made of different materials:
As earlier mentioned, bamboo mattress toppers only have covers or tickings made of bamboo viscose or bamboo rayon. It’s best to ensure this bamboo material used is natural and organic, without being made from toxic materials and VOCs, so they wouldn’t give you allergies. However, the filling or core is usually made of a different material.
Today, the majority of mattress toppers come with a foam core. Most toppers have a viscoelastic core made of so-called memory foam, also known as foam with a memory effect. It's made of polyurethane Trusted SourceMemory foam - Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org with some addition of chemicals, which increases its density and viscosity. This innovative material yields under the pressure of a lying body and only selectively at the point where the pressure is exerted. Due to this property, called point elasticity, the memory foam ensures optimal pressure relief and reduces the likelihood of painful muscle tension.
At the same time, the viscose foam returns to its original shape with a slight delay so that no sagging spots or dents form on the mattress topper.
The memory foam usually has a perforation for better ventilation. This foam feels medium-hard and slightly warming. Please note that the memory foams are mostly temperature-dependent. At low temperatures, the foams react a little more slowly and have a higher degree of hardness.
The point-elastic foams have been proven to improve the quality of lying down and are particularly suitable for people with sleep disorders due to headaches, back pain, or tense muscles.
Modern gel foams, which are used more and more frequently as the core of a mattress topper, have comparable material properties. Gel foams are also point-elastic and return to their starting position with a time delay, so they have a high resilience.
In addition to the viscoelastic foams, some manufacturers use conventional cold foam. This foam has an open-pore structure for better heat and moisture management but is not point-elastic but mainly area-elastic. An area-elastic material yields to the pressure over a wide area; in this way, the pressure relief is less pronounced with this material.
The cold foam does not return to its original shape with a delay but immediately so that no recesses are formed on a high-quality mattress topper with a cold foam core. Restless sleepers often feel more comfortable on a cold foam mattress topper than on a pad with a memory foam core.
The density of toppers is expressed in kg / m³. It must be greater than or equal to 40 kg / m³. However, it’s always advisable to choose models which have elastic straps on each corner of the mattress topper, like there are on the subrtex Bed Mattress Topper. This way, the topper can be perfectly installed on the mattress.
Like all bedding, a mattress topper needs intensive, careful care for optimal hygiene. Only a clean topper can create a healthy climate in bed and prevent the spread of dust mites with all the negative consequences.
The instructions for caring for a topper can be found on the sewn-in label, and these often vary depending on the model. Waterproof protectors are the easiest to care for because, due to their primary use in child and nursing care, these mattress covers should meet high hygienic standards.
Often the fabrics are not only washable at 95 degrees Celsius but can also be tumble dried. With only a few exceptions, the toppers with pads and a foam core are removable and can be cleaned at 30 degrees Celsius with a wash program for easy-care laundry.
In most cases, the textile fabric is not dryer-proof. The mattress protectors with a soft filling do not have a removable cover and do not always belong in the washing machine.
The purpose of certifications in sleep products is to ensure the product is organic as claimed or that there are no harsh chemicals involved in the production processes. The most common certification labels found in mattress toppers are those of CERTIPUR US and OEKO-Tex. The subrtex Bed Mattress Topper comes with both certifications and is, therefore, one of the highest qualities and safest bamboo mattress toppers to get.
Your mattress topper should come with a risk-free night trial of around 30 to 200 days or other forms of customer satisfaction guarantee. It should also come with a warranty which should cover between a year to 10 years (or even up to a lifetime, as the Puffy Mattress Topper comes with). This ensures that, after the sleep trial expires, you can have something to fall back on should you have issues with the product.
Bamboo materials are safe for kids. However, you should avoid buying a topper or sleep product whose filling is made from memory foam to avoid risks of suffocation, the main cause of sudden infant death syndromes (SIDS).
A mattress topper should be replaced within 3 to 5 years. It should be washed once every one to two months.
