For modern mattresses such as those from the Sleep Number lines, you have to ask yourself whether you want a frame for a smart bed or a value bed. For frames that are going to be paired with Sleep Number beds, you have to be thinking about adjustability, smart features, and the option and functions upholstered frames could offer you, in addition to the mattress.
So, which is the best bed frame for the Sleep Number bed, and how do you choose one? From adjustable bed frames to platform/SmartBase beds and upholstered frames, we reviewed the best bed frame for Sleep Number and ranked them from the overall best to specialty picks. Keep reading and check them out!
"The Nectar bed frame is an adjustable bed that is made from metal and fabric. It comes with a wireless remote for adjusting the frame. The bed frame has zero gravity and offers massage features, also controllable via the remote."
The Nectar bed frame is an adjustable bed that is made from metal and fabric. It comes with a wireless remote for adjusting the frame. The bed frame has zero gravity and offers massage features, also controllable via the remote. The product is available in Queen, Twin XL, Full, and Split King. The split King is the same as putting two Twin XLs next to each other. Nectar offers with this a 50-night trial period. So you will be able to try it out and see if it is the ideal choice for you.
The adjustable bed frame is a good fit for women that are pregnant. It’s also the ideal choice for people with back issues; people who read a lot; people who watch TV, or who play on their iPad before bed.
What stands out?
What impressed us most about this unit is its ease of assembly. Nectar offers free shipping on this adjustable bed frame. It shows up in a relatively small box, and the setup process is about 30 minutes or under for one person. If you've put together IKEA furniture before, then you can put it together. It's not the cheapest bed frame in the world, but it's not expensive too. We also like that they have a trial period and it also comes with a three-year warranty.
What cons did we manage to find?
You'll notice that they don't have a regular King or California King option. We don't know why they don't have those, but we are guessing maybe they've reasoned that most people end up getting a Queen or most couples end up getting the Split King option because you want to be able to adjust both sides independent of each other. This means the downside isn't a deal-breaker!
The Amerisleep bed is an adjustable system with a full-body massage system, and under-bed LED lighting. It can transform your flat mattress into a completely adjustable sleep system. It can redefine your bedroom activity, thanks to its customizability and ergonomics.
The Amerisleep is very similar to the Nectar adjustable bed in that it has a zero-gravity design and can offer you a full body massage. Thanks to its adjustability, It is ideal for those who are looking at getting Sleep Number beds. Amerisleep also provides you free shipping and setup that is worth around $400. So, you’re not just saving money. You can save yourself the headache of putting together something you’re not skilled in. So, you’ll be able to avoid damaging the bed but just watch as the deliverymen bring them in and set them up for you.
What are its best features?
The adjustable bed also features up to 10 years of warranty. What's even more innovative isn't just the under-bed storage, but the under-bed lighting.
What could be improved?
The downside is that the bed is very expensive. The price will set you back by more than a thousand dollars, and we think it could be lower. Compare it with the Nectar Adjustable Bed+, which is very similar to the Amerisleep model, and you'd see you're paying more than $700 extra for this. But the consolatory offer is that you won't pay for delivery and setup.
The Ascension® from Brooklyn Bedding is also an adjustable and heavy-duty bed base with a weight capacity of up to 850 lbs. It has a remote-control system that operates the unit wirelessly. It can raise your head and give your foot elevation, putting you in a state of zero gravity. You can also adjust it to be in a flat position.
With the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension™, we’re dealing with the same type of bed frame system as the ones from Nectar and Amerisleep, which we’ve reviewed. This model has an ultra-adjustable system that is also controlled by a wireless remote. But this is of more heavy-duty design. It’s most suitable for chronic snorers, thanks to the anti-snoring postures.
What are our favorite features?
We particularly liked the zero-gravity design of the bed. The zero-gravity position is beneficial as it promotes increased circulation and blood oxygen levels. Raising the legs above the heart allows the spine to decompress. This relieves pressure on the spine and helps to soothe other aches and pains.
What could be better?
Where we particularly think Brooklyn Bedding should improve on is in the warranty offer. Already, the product is price-friendly and offers rich features for comfort, relaxation, and aesthetics. But we think a 2-year warranty isn't enough for a near-$1000 bed frame.
We won’t be done with adjustable bed frames for Sleep Number if we don’t mention the iSleepEZ Adjustable Base. This has a base of metal and a bedding material made from fabric. It’s equipped with a whisper-quiet motor and space-saving wall-hugging design. It has five memory positions and variable massage intensities that will have you relaxing in pure luxury.
Like all the models we’ve seen, this model has a gravity position design, a foot massage system, and a wireless remote for adjusting the bed and controlling the massage and gravity down actuators. Unlike the Nectar Adjustable Bed+, this model has the King and California King versions. There are also the Queen and Twin XL sizes. The adjustable bed is ideal for two sleepers as it has a sleeping weight capacity of 750 lbs.
What makes it special?
We're very impressed with the remote-control system. It is wireless, backlit, and a built-in flashlight. It also has night bed lighting.
What cons did we find?
The only downside is that it is very heavy. However, once installed, this will offer great value. This also contributes to its heavy-duty sturdiness.
Meet one of the most heavy-duty mattress foundations – the Zinus SmartBase 14-inch. It has a weight capacity of a whopping 4,400 lbs. The foundation supports different bed sizes from Twin-to-Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King. The Smart Base models come in different models: Standard, Deluxe, Premium, and Elite. With the premium, you can get either the 16 or 18-inch height model; this gives you more space underneath for storage. However, this version comes in at 14 inches high.
This SmartBase is for those who don’t like box springs. We know they can be big and bulky, making them hard to move around. They wear out over time and waste a lot of good space. However, the Zinus SmartBase mattress foundation is ideal for kids who need a new, durable, safe, heavy-duty, and stable bed set up.
What do we love it for?
What we like most about this mattress platform is its heavy-duty structure. Made of metal, it can hold a weight of up to 4,400 lbs. What is also cool about this foundation is you have a lot more room for storage under the bed. It doesn't require any tools to put it together. It is engineered to be silent, and the legs are recessed to help prevent injuries.
What were we disappointed with?
Although Zinus advertises this as a silent bed base, some users found out that it started to squeak after some period of use. A few more users also called out Zinus for not honoring their warranty.
The Zinus Dachelle is an upholstered platform bed frame that is made of metal and upholstered in polyester with knitted buttons. The platform weighs 100 pounds approximately and can support a weight of around 250 to 500 lbs.
All the parts and pieces that come with the bed frame can be stored in the headboard itself. The side pieces, the legs, etc., were all put into the bed frame headboard during delivery, and there’s a zipper in the back. So, this doubles as a storage-like container which is so practical.
What are its best features?
We think it's very well designed. All the pieces are of good quality and sturdy. The upholstery provides great comfort and will add a lift to your bedroom decor.
What could be improved?
The bed platform can be more weight-resistant. Altogether, it weighs 103 pounds and has weight support of 250 to 500 pounds. With these data, we think it's very heavy and still is not heavy-duty enough.
Things to Consider
When buying a base for your Sleep Number, important decisions have to be made: Which mattress will be best for me? Do I need an adjustable, fixed, or upholstered frame? And how big should the bed be anyway? Here is the most important information, tips, and recommendations about buying a bed frame for your Sleep Number bed.
Why do you need a special bed frame for a Sleep Number bed?
Sleep Number is an American brand that produces modern mattresses that are expected to be part of a system that is ergonomic, practical, and beneficial to the health system of the users. Special bed frames for Sleep Number mattresses, depending on the model you’re picking, must have high stability and be heavy-duty.
Sleep Number is also known for its range of adjustable beds. So, choosing a standard platform bed for these, for example, means you’re putting a square peg in a round hole. So, adjustable bed frames like the iSleepEZ adjustable base and Amerisleep adjustable bed frame are most ideal for those who are looking at getting Sleep Number beds like the Flexfit™ smart adjustable bases.
They should be made of metal. It’s also practical that they have storage spaces underneath (this is not Sleep Number-specific, but a personal need criterion).
Notable Features Bed Frame for a Sleep Number Bed Should Have
Some of the features you should watch out for in a bed frame for a Sleep Number bed are the following.
The Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen; King; California King; and Split King are the most common sizing you’ll find in the description sheets of bed bases. However, when thinking of the size of the bed, you have to consider the width, length, and height of the bed.
The right width
If the bedroom is really small, many people ask themselves whether a narrower bed will also be ideal. However, a bed should have a certain minimum width. A single bed should be at least 100 centimeters wide, the twin bed 180 centimeters. Otherwise, you can hardly turn around undisturbed. This has a negative impact on sleep.
When measuring, you should also keep in mind that these dimensions only apply to the lying surface.
There is usually a bed frame with at least two to three centimeters on each side. There should be 80 centimeters of space on each side for getting in and out – otherwise, it will be uncomfortable. With a twin bed, a room width of around 3.5 meters is often required.
The right length
Standard beds are usually 200 centimeters long; some space savers have only 190 centimeters. But is that enough for healthy sleep? The rule of thumb for length is height plus 20 to 30 centimeters.
Anyone taller than 180 centimeters will have problems with a bed length of 190 centimeters. For the extra space, however, you have to dig deeper into your pocket because not only is the frame more expensive, you also pay extra for the slatted frame and mattress for unusual sizes.
Our tip: Some products made by a local carpenter can be cheaper, at least for the frame, than the special size made by the brand manufacturer.
The right height
40 to 45 centimeters is the standard. But you should be honest with yourself: do you have back problems? Maybe you’re not as flexible as you used to be – then it should be 50 centimeters from the edge of the bed.
The weight capacity of the bed should be determined by the thickness and weight of the mattress and the sleeper(s) or the number of sleepers. Most brands attach a weight limit to their bed frames. For example, it’s clearly stated that the weight limit of the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension is 850 lbs maximum.
In any case, the weight limit should not go beyond 500 lbs. Fortunately, you can find models with more than 4000 lbs weight capacity, such as the Zinus SmartBase Heavy-duty Foundation. This weight capacity would be ideal for double beds, which will be used by people with heavyweight capacity, and for playful kids who like frolicking on the bed.
A bed should be stable, especially if children are frolicking in it. So, how can you tell whether it will meet such demands? Take a look at how the frames are held together.
Models in which the side, head, and foot sections are not just simply screwed together are particularly convenient.
Instead, you should opt for classic connections such as wedges, finger joints, and wooden dowels or slots and tenons that are not only stable but can also be easily dismantled and reassembled using a connector system.
Bed frames are usually made of metal, wood, and fabrics or leather (for upholstered bed frames). So, which is the best choice?
Wooden Bed Frames
Bed frames made of solid wood are trendy. These types of bed frames are often made of chipboard. That, of course, makes them cheaper than those made of natural wood.
However, they contain a comparatively large amount of glue, a possible source of pollutants in the bedroom. And a lot of chipboard furniture is not stable either. For example, if screws get removed, they are difficult to repair.
Solid wood furniture, on the other hand, is extremely robust. Small scratches can be removed simply by sanding the wood and waxing or oiling it if necessary. The material and the treatment create an open-pored surface that can absorb and release moisture. This ensures good room air, especially with completely untreated woods. The solid wood is also pleasant to the touch.
Solid wood beds also have enough leeway to expand and contract again depending on the humidity. When moving, the parts are simply taken apart and put back together again.
Metal Bed Frames
Metals are easy to build for flexible constructions, such as in the making of adjustable bed frames. Metal bed frames are sturdy, heavy-duty, and durable.
However, there are some downsides to metal bed frames. Bed frames that are held together with metal can disturb sleep, although that is controversial. Building biologists criticize the fact that certain metals can have magnetic effects or can interact with electromagnetic fields from radio alarm clocks or televisions.
With sensitive people, it could lead to sleep disorders or cardiovascular problems. Some bad quality problems can also be prone to getting squeaky after some period of use. However, if you shy away from the supposed risk, it is best to choose a metal-free bed.
First, it’s always great to watch out for guarantees such as the sleep trial and return-back policies. For example, the Nectar Adjustable Bed includes a 50-day sleep trial which means you can return it during that window if you’re not satisfied with it. Some brands offer up to 100-day sleep trials.
A lifetime warranty on offer is the best as fast as the warranty is concerned. However, you’ll still find models such as the Amerisleep Adjustable Bed with up to 10 years of warranty. Five years is still great for a cover against defects and other issues, but below that, it’s not a great deal.
Below are extra features you should watch out for:
Massage features: After a long stressful day, there’s nothing like falling into the arms of an adjustable bed with massage features suspended in gravity position. This feature is offered in beds such as the iSleepEZ adjustable bed, the Nectar Adjustable Bed, and the Ascension They are easily controlled by one-touch buttons on the beds and by remote controls.
The headboard: Headboards are necessary for platform bed frames. They can be upholstered, as you can find with the Zinus Dachelle. Headboards can also be available in a curved shape, which gives way when leaning against it or with a wide variety of covers. Many manufacturers use plywood, especially multiplex, for such curved shapes. They have a comparatively high amount of glue. The seller or manufacturer should be able to prove that only formaldehyde-free white glue was used.
Headboards are not only available in wood or with a fabric cover but also in leather, wickerwork, or felt. The fabric cover may be designed to be removed and washed.
Storage spaces: The best bed platforms and adjustable models should offer storage spaces. These not only provide an extra place to store your things, but they also provide ventilation. A person sweats out around a liter of liquid every night. Therefore, the mattress should also get air from below so that it can dry thoroughly. Otherwise, it will start to get moldy at some point. If a bed box is used, it should not completely seal the bed from below. If the room is not in use, you can leave the box open several times.
Smart bed bases such as the Amerisleep and the iSleepEZ adjustable beds are very easy to install. It can be installed by one or two individuals in under 30 minutes. The Zinus SmartBase 14 Inches is the easiest to install. No tools are required for assembling this. Also, many manufacturers offer to help you deliver and install the smart bed base, even for free. These extra services are offered especially for more premium models such as the Amerisleep Adjustable Bed.
Massage beds are not only safe, and they are beneficial to health. They promote increased circulation and blood oxygen levels. Studies also suggest they are beneficial for people suffering from cancer, migraines, and people who have just had heart surgery.
